Barbados Opposition files motion to stop general election

11

High Court judge Justice Cicely Chase is expected to hear later today, an injunction filed for by a member of the minority opposition Barbados Sovereignty Party seeking to stop Wednesday’s general election.

The application, filed by Phillip Catlyn, contends that more than 5,000 COVID patients are being denied their constitutional right to vote.

President Dame Sandra Mason and the attorney general, Dale Marshall, are the respondents.

Catlyn claims that the exclusion of the COVID-19 positive citizens from the election, breaches Section 6 of the Representation of the People Act, which enshrines the right of eligible residents and citizens to vote.

He is also arguing that Dame Sandra, who was sworn in as President of Barbados last November, was unreasonably exercising her discretionary powers by accepting Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s election call on December 27.

  1. Mama Mia who many have lauded as the epitome of perfection where Caribbean politics and politicians are concerned. The grass is certainly always greener on the other side.

  2. The ERA of of Prime Ministers throughout the region of having the exclusive power to call an
election needs to curtailed. The election date must be set by virtue of the constitution on a specific date after a specific amount years in office.

Time to amend the constitution with such an act.

    • Focus on buying cormeal, sweet oil and likkle sugar from Elvis shop on Freetown main road. Support the local entrepreneurs and tap run you mouth on Barbados bizniz.

      • It would be best if you spend a little time educating that incompetent mind of yours . It will lead to you stop depending on a free jam and turkey at Christmas time. You’ll be able to buy your own!!!! Stupid is as Stupid does! Digest that. Freeloader!!!!!

    • Why would an opposition party be against the idea of an early election call? You not ready? If the government is doing a bad job, as oppoition parties are apt to claim, why would you be against the people deciding early? Ringing from the oppoition mouth is always “call the election now” Bible speaks about the foolish virgins, let me suggest opposition partiess try to learn from those stories (have your oil ready)

  3. This is the most pathetic act of desperation I’ve ever seen in the WI. It’ll be a clean sweep again for Mia and de Bee’s.

  4. This is one of the more nonsensical crap I have ever heard.Where by 5000 eligible Barbados Voters rights are being suppressed. Be creative and plan for all to Vote,Mia Mottley.Black Leaders keeping their feet on the citizens necks. That seems to be the new trend around the Caribbean. It is not normal,it should never be so.
