Antony Kurt Athill Appointed as Information Commissioner Following Parliamentary Approval

The House of Representatives in Antigua and Barbuda has approved a motion for the appointment of Antony Kurt Athill as the new Information Commissioner.

This appointment falls under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2004, particularly Section 35 (1), which outlines the process for the selection of an Information Commissioner.

According to Section 35 (1) of the Act, the Information Commissioner is appointed by the Governor General, following the recommendation of the Prime Minister, and requires the approval of both houses of Parliament.

Athill will serve in this role for a three-year term, beginning on October 1, 2024, and concluding on September 1, 2027. His annual salary has been set at EC $54,000.

The motion for Athill’s appointment was debated in Parliament by Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Leader of the Opposition, MP Jamale Pringle.

This appointment is seen as a key development in ensuring transparency and access to information in line with the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.
