Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has set ambitious goals following the recent United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) ranking, where the country secured the second-highest position in the Caribbean, trailing only St. Kitts and Nevis.
In a statement on radio addressing the UN’s assessment, Prime Minister Browne emphasized Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to advancing its human development indicators.
“The United Nations just ranked us 54 on the Human Development Index, second highest in the Caribbean,” said Prime Minister Browne.
“When we finish building out (UWI) and increasing more graduates per capita, we are going to be in the number one position shortly.”
Browne said Antigua and Barbuda’s strong showing in the HDI reflects ongoing efforts to improve education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for its citizens.
The government’s policies aim to enhance the quality of life and well-being of Antiguans and Barbudans, positioning the nation as a key player in the region’s development landscape.
Meanwhile, neighboring St. Kitts and Nevis has secured the top spot in the CARICOM region in terms of human development, according to the UNDP’s 2023-24 Human Development Report.
This achievement underscores the effectiveness of St. Kitts and Nevis’ education and health policies, which have contributed to the nation’s impressive HDI index and overall progress.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts and Nevis welcomed the UN’s recognition, highlighting the nation’s dedication to sustainable development and improving the lives of its people.
The UN report, published on March 13, 2024, under the theme: “Breaking the Gridlock: Re-imagining Cooperation in a Polarized World,” indicated that among the countries in the CARICOM, Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved the highest rank, placing 51st out of 193 nations evaluated.
