Another government minister and Cabinet Secretary test positive for COVID-19

It has been confirmed that another government minister and the Cabinet Secretary have contracted COVID-19.

The name of the minister has not been revealed. When contacted, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ambassador Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst provided confirmation of this information in a brief statement.

 

The minister will now be required to quarantine at least for the next 14 days, until multiple tests have returned negative results. Relatives and other persons they may have interacted with closely will also be required to quarantine as per standard COVID-19 protocols.

 

This now brings to two, the number of Cabinet Ministers who have tested positive for the virus.

 

Last week, Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin revealed he, and ten members of his family, tested positive for COVID-19 following Christmas dinner which they shared together. Minister Benjamin, who self quarantined following his diagnosis, said yesterday, “We are fine thanks. We are all negative”.

 

Having suffered no complications, Benjamin believes being fully vaccinated and receiving a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot served as protective barriers for him against the most severe effects of the virus.

 

This latest development means today’s meeting of the Cabinet, the first for 2022, will be convened via Zoom.

 

In recent times, the meetings have been held both in person and virtually, but with the recent spike in cases and two vaccinated members of the decision making body contracting the virus, future meetings are likely to be held exclusively online.

The cabinet members are turning up Covid positive although they are vaccinated we all know that the vaccine does not prevent us from getting Covid but they are quick to switch to having their cabinet meetings virtually on zoom while the schools are still open. They made the decision to have the children do face to face even with the increase in Covid cases in Antigua and Barbuda they should also do face to face cabinet meetings .

      • @ Wannabe the funny thing is I started to write a response to CRrmie but I deleted it because I rremembered they usually speaks like an ass on this platform whenever they open their mouth to say anything. . You learn NOTHING from NOTHING .Life with no purpose what a waste .

  4. I can never understand the secrecy surrounding the illness of our Ministers of Government in Antigua. If a Minister comes down with covid the Nation should be provided with the name of the Minister who is involved. There should be no stigma attached to illness and I do not think there is in the case of covid. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines at least five Ministers are currently affected by covid, including Camillo Gonslaves, and the names are released to the public. Why is it that Antigua has to be so different in so many things.

Since you voicing for medical dicslosures, don’t you think your son should have probably set an example in this by fully disclosing his medical conditions? Why the public had to wait for him to be detained by the police before he started crying about such? I hear the apple don’t fall far friom the tree (all talk no bite).

      • hmmm you read and do not understand? No one is asking for the disclosure of any one’s medical conditions. The case with covid is different and all I am saying if a Minister of Government comes down with covid why should that be a secret? You have seen all over the world when a public official falls ill it is simply disclosed that the public official is ill. You have the recent case of St. Vincent and the Grenadines where the names of the four Ministers who contracted covid are published. You say that your comment is rather ridiculous would be an understatement.

  5. SCHOOLS MUST BE CLOSED IMMEDIATELY. Where is the teacher’s union? What use it having a union if they have no spine and wont take a stand over the most basic issue of health and safety for teachers and students

  6. If a Minister of Cabinet has Covid-19.The public has a right to know.The Minister is not a private citizen. He/She is a Public Figure and cannot hide behind Privacy.

  8. Didn’t SERPANT SAY HEALTH OFFICIALS SHOULD BE FIRED OR CHASTISED FOR GIVING DEAD PEOPLE’S HEALTH STATUS TO THE PUBLIC?   9. Covid-19 and its Variants,do not give a damn if you are a rich man,poor man,begger man or thief. Whether you wear red,blue and or orange.If you are a Cabinet Minister you could get it,ask Cutie Boy and the one whose name is being withheld.
