“He never believed in sleeping with his cup full while others went without,” Teresa-Anne Michael shared as she delivered a poignant eulogy for her late brother, Asot Michael, during his funeral service today. Her words painted a vivid picture of a man whose life was defined by compassion, generosity, and an unyielding commitment to his community and country.
Addressing mourners, including family, friends, and dignitaries, Teresa-Anne celebrated her brother’s extraordinary contributions to Antigua and Barbuda. “Asot’s philosophy was simple but profound: to serve, to uplift, and to leave a lasting impact,” she said.
Born in 1969, Asot Michael grew up in a family deeply rooted in the values of hard work and giving back. His parents instilled in their children the importance of education and community service.
“Our heritage is built on the belief that transformation comes through dedication and compassion,” Teresa-Anne reflected. She emphasized how these principles shaped Asot’s journey, guiding him to pursue higher education and leadership.
Michael earned a degree in economics and finance from the University of Florida, followed by a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Miami. “For Asot, education was never just a personal achievement. It was a tool to help him serve his people better,” she said.
Asot Michael’s political career began under the mentorship of Sir Lester Bird, who recognized his potential and appointed him as a special assistant. This opportunity marked the start of a career defined by dedication and innovation.
Between 2001 and 2004, Michael served as Minister of Public Works, where he championed infrastructure development. “He took on challenging tasks with determination and delivered results that improved the lives of many,” Teresa-Anne noted.
In 2014, Michael became Minister of Tourism, Investment, Energy, and Economic Development. During his tenure, Antigua and Barbuda experienced unprecedented growth in tourism, with modernized facilities and record-breaking visitor arrivals. “He revitalized our tourism sector, ensuring it became a cornerstone of our economy,” she said.
Michael’s dedication extended beyond policy and infrastructure; he was deeply connected to the people he served. Representing St. Peter, he built personal relationships with his constituents, attending their celebrations, comforting them in times of loss, and advocating for their needs.
“He was not just a representative but a servant-leader who genuinely cared,” Teresa-Anne said. She highlighted his efforts to fund scholarships, support housing initiatives, and provide opportunities for young people.
Outside of his political achievements, Michael was known for his vibrant personality and love of life. “Asot had an extraordinary ability to bring people together, to share joy, and to make everyone feel valued,” Teresa-Anne said.
He was a passionate supporter of culture and the arts, frequently attending local music events and celebrating Antigua and Barbuda’s heritage. “His love for life was infectious, and his commitment to promoting our culture was unwavering,” she added.
As her eulogy drew to a close, Teresa-Anne reflected on the profound impact of her brother’s life. “Asot’s spirit lives on in every community he uplifted, every dream he nurtured, and every life he touched,” she said. “His legacy is one of compassion, service, and unwavering dedication to his people.”
Quoting Khalil Gibran, she concluded, “For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?”
