400 to be out of work on July 31 as call center closes

The management of NCO Financial today communicated with staff the official closing date and the actual reasons for the closure.

In a memo to staff obtained by Antigua Newsroom, the company said it would close on July 31.

The nearly 400 workers were told that the “high operational day to costs in Antigua” are outside of the company’s control.

“The elevated operating costs are making client rates for the Antigua site unsellable and clients are finding more competitive alternatives globally,” the memo said.

The company told staff today that all ways of avoiding the situation have been considered.

Based on the letter, staff will remain on regular pay until the end of July but they’ve been advised: “to look for additional employment during this time.”

Upon termination, the staff was promised severance, vacation pay and salaries outstanding.

The call center was one of the largest private sector employers here. The government offered the company additional concessions as an incentive to remain. Prime Minister Gaston Browne also blamed the closure on partly on poor customer service but the issue was not raised in the memo.

  1. Poor customer service is always normal in Antigua unfortunately. So if that’s the case, then invest in training centers.

    • SO YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT WAS THE CASE ,THE PRIME MINISTER PROBABLY DID HAVE NOTHING TO SAY SO HE SPAT GARBAGE….THEY JUST WANTED TO OPERATE FOR LITTLE AND NOTHING,Y YOU THINK THEY MOVING JAMAICA REGARDLESS OF THE CRIME SITUATION THERE ,THAT IS Y YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE STANDARD FOR COMPANIES LIKE THESE TO OPERATE IN THE CARIBBEAN….IMAGINE GOING TO WORK TO RECEIVE MONEY THAT CAN’T PUT FOOD ON YOUR TABLE. OFF TO JAMAICA TO PAY THEM PITTENS BUT IF ITS ONE THING THRY IN THE RIGHT COUNTRY SO THEY BETTER ALWAYS PAY OR ELSE..

  2. Poor customer service is not the main reason for the closure, operating cost is, if it was for the customer service why now we have been operating here for more that 14 years why close now if that was the issue, be real.. to my Prime Minister Gaston Brown i respect you dearly, but if that is what you have to say i would best advise you to shut your mouth because more than half of your party need customer service training yet still the party running the country. #jointhetoastmastersclub
