A man has been jailed for 12 years after admitting to sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl who had been in his care since birth.
The sentence was handed down by the High Court a day after the defendant pleaded guilty. In addition to the main charge, he received two five-year sentences for serious indecency, to run at the same time.

The court heard that the man, who had been in a relationship with the child’s mother and is listed on the girl’s birth certificate, held a position of trust in the child’s life. The judge treated that relationship as a major factor in the seriousness of the case.
The offences took place between late 2022 and July 2023 while the child was staying with him at a residence where he worked as a caretaker. Evidence outlined multiple incidents of abuse, including threats to keep the child silent.

The matter came to light in August 2023 after the girl’s mother noticed signs of injury and questioned her. The disclosure led to a report to police and the man’s subsequent arrest.
The identities of both the child and the defendant have been withheld to protect the victim.

Once again our Judiciary has failed us. What is 12 years? The child will carry that trauma for the rest of her life. Also this nonsense of serving multiple sentences simultaneously has to stop.
“Under Antigua and Barbuda’s Sexual Offences Act, the offence of rape carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.“ however they gave him 12 years. This is just sickening!! He should be in there for life, matter fact, he deserves the electric chair. Hanging his ass make him suffer.
Twelve years can never undo what was done to that child. The sentence is justice in a legal sense, but the emotional damage will take far longer to heal. Cases like this remind us why protection of children must never be negotiable.

Lord have mercy. It’s bad enough for even once, but multiple times ? Light sentences like that encourage crimes. The laws need to be revisited.

I beg you to now focus on your daughter. Pray over her and get her into counseling. That type of abuse affects the victim for years even into adulthood. Be there to support her and guide her. Let her know what happened was WRONG and you love her. May God bless you both 🙏
