Youth Ambassadors Lead Campaign Against Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

A team of youth ambassadors is raising awareness about the risks of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). The National Youth Ambassador Corp, managed by the Department of Youth Affairs, aims to empower young people in Antigua and Barbuda.

Youth ambassador Chrysean Jarvis, with his background in food nutrition and health, emphasizes that SSBs contribute significantly to health issues, including cardiovascular diseases. He stresses the importance of mindful consumption and proper food preparation to maintain overall health.

Jarvis, along with fellow ambassadors Esquires Henry, Kerron McKenzie, and Shaquan O’Neil, is spearheading the Rural South Back-to-School Health Expo on Sunday, August 25th, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The event will offer free health services such as blood glucose and cholesterol testing, blood pressure checks, and body mass index measurements. Attendees will also benefit from health talks, physical activities, and healthy refreshments.

Jarvis expresses gratitude to his sponsors, including Dr. Monica Osborn Stevens of MOS Medical, and other corporate supporters such as Medical Benefits Scheme, CostPro, Anjo Wholesale, and Island Provision. He also appreciates the community’s support, particularly Ms. Philip’s donation, which underscores the collective commitment to improving health in Antigua and Barbuda.
