Young Workers Elect New Executive for ABWU’s Youth Arm
Young workers are poised to play a leading role in the future of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union. On Thursday, nearly 80 young workers participated in the Union’s Youth Congress, set to become an annual event on the Union’s calendar.
One of the major outcomes of the Congress was the election of a new executive for the ABWU’s Youth Arm. The following individuals will serve on the executive for the next two years.
President: Blair Rose
Vice President: Stephen Martin
Secretary: Shamantha Wendy Bideau
Asst. Secretary: Demarley Isaac
Treasurer: Charles Browne
Asst. Treasurer: Joshua Pigott
PRO: Tenaj Jonas
Asst. PRO: Kimberley Gordon
Events Coordinator: Suzetta Hamilton
Asst. Events Coordinator: Angel Williams
Rose, who previously served as Vice President of the Youth Arm expressed enthusiasm about her new role. “Young workers constitute the second largest demographic in our Union’s membership and all across the world, workers’ organisations are highlighting the need to increase the participation of young workers and advance their issues,” Rose shared. “This is an incredible opportunity for the Youth Arm to lead the charge on issues such as climate change, the mental health of workers and accommodations for young working mothers,” Rose continued.
Speaking at the Congress, ABWU General Secretary, David Massiah said the event marked an important moment “to pass the baton” to young workers. Massiah urged the new Executive members to position themselves at the forefront of workers’ activities. “I wish to congratulate the new executive of the Youth Arm. However, this is not an opportunity for you to rest on your laurels. What will be required of you is more robust involvement in the union and within our membership,” Massiah noted.
The ABWU’s constitution encourages and supports the participation of young workers. The President of the Youth Arm sits as an extraordinary member on the Union’s Executive body.
Additionally, in September, the Union will host its 57th Annual Delegates Conference which is expected to see increased involvement from young workers.
