YOLO Summit: Infusing Entertainment and Music into Financial Education

0

During one of her highly acclaimed book launches, former first lady and author, Michelle Obama said that the best way to educate people is to “First get them to laugh, then you get them to listen.”

For many, the topic of money can be quite daunting. But managing personal finances can be more, or less…Interesting, depending on your creativity and sense of humor.

As the summer season progresses, many are making plans for Carnival, a vacation, or some type of adventure.

Connecting with our culture may be top-of-mind, however, we should also focus on getting our finances in order.

We are halfway through the year, and this is the perfect time to consider smart money moves to improve our financial health.

A lack of organization can harm our personal finances just as much as being short on cash.

Not paying bills on time will lead to late fees, and not keeping track of checking account balances can lead to overdraft fees.

So how can we make learning about your fiscal wellbeing a fun experience? Laughter triggers connection and money lessons are much more memorable when we infuse humor and a sense of lightheartedness.

Jokes are one of the oldest forms of storytelling and are regarded as a universal form of human expression.

A joke is a brief story, observation, or thought that has a setup and a punchline that triggers a physiological response—laughter.

SamuelFields Consulting Group (SFCG) believes that learning about finance should be fun and are committed to empowering the youth to live their dream life through financial knowledge.

This consortium of financial wellness experts uses music and entertainment as fun learning tools to inspire audiences to improve their financial health.

According to SFCG CEO, Megan Samuel-Fields, “Including humor makes financial lessons much more impactful.

From windfalls to the perils associated with debt and material needs. Various forms of entertainment including songs, sitcoms, movies, talk shows and live performances provide financial inspiration, caution, or motivation by showcasing how various characters earn, spend, invest, gift, lend or lose money,” she said.

SFCG will host the YOLO Summit on September 22 & 23 | 2023 which will address Youth, Opportunities, Lessons and Outcomes.

It will feature keynote speaker Brian “Dyalekt” Kushner, a St. Croix born artist and educator who teaches financial lessons using rhythm and rhyme. Dylaket utilizes artistic and cultural expressions to make human connections and to build financial themes using music and entertainment.

He references legendary songs in our Caribbean culture such as Dollah Wine, M-O-N-E-Y and Bills, Bills Everyday as rhythmic expressions that can be used to provide thought-provoking insights and lessons to highlight our money values.

As part of the YOLO Summit, Dyalekt and his award-winning team, Pockets Change, will organize a Money Jam or music contest where participants will win lots of prizes.

They will combine spoken word, music, dance, art, culture, and financial education to create original songs and performances based on key financial lessons.

Known for organizing the national award-winning annual Hip Hop Fin Fest in the US, Dyalekt will help the youth in Antigua and Barbuda “find their rhythm” as they tap into important money lessons and fuse finance-friendly beats from hip hop, reggae, calypso, or soca music.

“This Money Jam will increase financial awareness and create strong messaging to help the youth make the best decisions to manage their money and map out a bright financial future,” Dyalekt said.

“The YOLO Summit will be a fun, life changing, cultural experience.

We will combine practical advice, wit and humor on a single platter to enhance learning.

Music, dance, art and history are unique elements of Caribbean culture and provide exciting themes to inspire financial empowerment.

So, say goodbye to boring financial lectures and say hello to a wealth of knowledge and creativity, served with a large slice of fun,” Dyalekt said.
