Yearwood Jr. Eyes Father’s Seat in SPN Amidst Dynasty Debate

REAL NEWS – Residents are wondering whether another by-election might be on the horizon, since the son of a long-standing Antigua Labour Party (ALP) politician is offering himself up for elective politics.

Robin Yearwood Jr., the son of Sir Robin Yearwood, has penned a three-page letter to Fitzgerald Lewis, the chairman of the St. Phillip’s North Constituency Branch, and formally registered his interest to be the next constituency representative.

Sir Robin, who has held that seat for over four decades, was re- elected by a slim margin in the January 18, 2023 General Election.

Since he has gone only seven months into his new term, questions obviously are being asked about the early interest in his replacement.

Many believe Sir Robin will leave the political stage before his five- year term expires. Thus, his son is bidding to replace him, claiming his intention is to seamlessly serve the people of St. Phillip’s North and to champion their cause.

Yearwood Jr. acknowledges that his father did not do so well in the most recent poll and that the ALP was able to remain in office only by a shoestring majority.

Accordingly, he is hoping that, with him throwing his hat into the political ring, the outcome will be different in the next election.

Over the years, locals have joked that if Christopher Columbus were to return to Antigua today he would easily recognize St. Phillip’s North – since, they say, it looks the same as it did when this island was discovered in the 15th century.

However, the budding politician says he has a number of plans for the constituency, although he still resides in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, a woman is commenting that some ALP politicians like to create family dynasties, and the St. Phillip’s North situation would just be a swap of an older Yearwood for a younger.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne had indicated that a number of hopefuls had expressed interest in becoming the candidate in that constituency and the young Yearwood is one of them.

  1. For goodness sake, when will this uncontrollable rise of the “nepo babies” be halted in its tracks?

So far, the departments in housing, land and immigration has totally failed in Antigua, because nepotism is placing UNDER QUALIFIED personnel in charge of prominent positions that they CLEARLY cannot cope with.

And now we read that yet another person (who has clearly been given a clear run up the ladder of life) due to who his father is, and being given a leg up on the political and public sector ladder.

Bwoy, me glad my blood, sweat and tears has got me where I am, and made me the man that I am.

    NEPOTISM JUST DOESN’T WORK. PERIOD!!!

  2. Robin is on his last legs, so another by-election coming. UPP will be back in power in 2024. Robin go home and rest yourself nah jack.

  3. Have a primary race with 2- 4 of the hopefuls and allow the people of SPN to choose the one they would prefer to contest the seat on their behalf.
I know, I know…it’s wishful thinking on my part. That kind of democracy will NEVER exist in Antigua – at least, not in my lifetime; however, for such a “progressive” island, the hand picking of candidates are outdated and quite frankly unfair to the constituents. The concept of a primary in ANU would require a leader who is MORE dedicated to leading than controlling.

  4. If Robin Pickney no go dey! Labour Party nah get non money from Barret and Hadeed!!!!
Me done talk.!!!! Who suppose to ensure Antigua people money go to the same places over and over if them no have somebody in Cabinet..
And Antigua people put up with that. In this regards ABLP and UPP a the same ting..
