The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union expresses its disappointment with the recent decision taken by the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda on mandatory vaccination of Public of Public Service employees, Statutory Corporations and companies in which the Government has majority shares, by October 1st, 2021.

Our Union was invited by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda on Monday September 13th, 2021, to a virtual consultation meeting on mandatory national vaccination policy scheduled for Thursday September 16th, 2021 at 3:00p.m.

As we prepared for this important discussion with stakeholders, the Cabinet’s decision came like a thief in the night seeking to rob employees of their fundamental right to choose
to be vaccinated or not.

Whilst recognizing the health risk faced by Covid-19 Pandemic, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union does not support mandatory vaccination. We do, however, advocate for a stronger education and all-inclusive information campaign on the importance of vaccination and Covid-19 testing for employees, vaccinated and unvaccinated, at the
expense of the employer.

We encourage the Government to reconsider its position and engage the relevant stakeholders prior to the development of any legislative measure that will seek to undermine the rights of workers within our twin island nation.
