PRESS RELEASE

The Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union concluded its 85th Annual Delegates Conference on Monday 30th September 2024 which was celebrated under the theme “Workers Participation is Essential for Sustainable Development”. The conference was officially declared open by President Bernard DeNully at the opening ceremony held on the previous day. Addressing the gathering were chairman of the ADLP – Hon. E. P. Chet Greene and the featured speaker, I-Ion. Melford Nicholas. Hon. E. P Chet Greene reflected on the historical importance of the AT&LU to the socioeconomic and political development of Antigua and Barbuda. He also avowed that the AT&LU and the ABLP were inextricably bound and shared common values and goals. Hon. Melford Nicholas gave an analytical perspective of the theme within the context of global dynamics. He agreed that workers participation was essential to sustainable development but reminded workers that they too have a responsibility to honour the terms and conditions of their employment.

On day two of the conference, delegates and AT&LU’s officials discussed, in a very candid manner, the union’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The four hours discussion yielded clear objectives on the way forward and reassured the delegates that the AT&LU will continue to be a vanguard for workers rights in Antigua and Barbuda.

There were no changes in members of the executive committee of the AT&LU during this conference. Election of the executive committee members are held biannually. The current executive committee was elected last year at the AT&LU’s 84th Annual Delegates Conference.

The AT&LU’s officers and staff returned to work on Tuesday 1st October 2024, under the leadership of President Bernard DeNully and General Secretary Alrick Daniel, tasked wit-h the 85111Annual Delegates Conference’s-mandate.
