CABINET NOTES: The Cabinet held a discussion about the re-purposing of the Deluxe Cinema building on High Street.
It was agreed that the work will begin immediately and completion is anticipated in late 2026, when the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place in Antigua.
There is a tenant in the building at this time and Notice has to be given for the tenant to vacate.
The Deluxe Cinema building is to be turned into a National Performing Arts Center – where the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra (ABYSO) will have its home, and a Theatre for the Performing Arts will also be housed.
It is now anticipated that many schools, whose students engaged in Theatre Arts and Drama competitions, will be able to utilize the re-purposed building when completed.

Deluxe Cinema gain, bloody waste of government funds, was just to please a com raid dirty set of vampires
About time time,we do have a lot of talented youths, and adults here in Antigua and Barbuda
Finally! That building has been sitting there forever — glad to see it put to use.
As a performer, this is exciting news.
We’ve been needing a proper performing arts space for years
I used to go to the Deluxe as a kid. Can’t wait to see what they do with it.
I really like this
yes looking forward to more THEATRE performances. Our young people are very talented!
I am now convinced that Gassy is running Antigua via social media.
Last week I commented on a story in this portal.
I questioned who was collecting rent from the Tennant in the Deluxe building.
Voila!!! Voila!!!! Voila!!!! It reported made it’s way to.cabiney and is in the news today.
Where is the money coming from.for it’s transformation?
I know.
Mr Knight has been questioning the use of CBI/CIP funds.
Tomorrow we will.hear that it is going to be used to fund that repair.
This government doesn’t have a single original idea.
It seems they listen to the radio, read the Obseverer news, follow this portal.to see the people’s concerns and act without planning.
Has the work to repurpose the Deluxe Cinema been sent out to tenders?
Will it be given to Turner’s Construction?
From the date the property was purchased to this present date, the rent collected should be able to comfortably execute the repairs.
Let me hear you on this Pringle.
You can’t leave everything up to Richard Lewis.
To be replaced on the back burner until pre election reminders are needed again
Sing🎶. Tell me the old old story.
Poor location, parking challenge, especially as people fraid for sturdiness of sunshine hub car park & nighttime safety.
Is old cinema free from mold & a healthy building structurally?
I thought ABYSO had been donated land by Hadeed and are actively fundraising for a purpose-built performance & rehearsal centre.
Has this changed?
The concept of a performing arts center is laudable; the delivery of same is challenging if to be done properly.
I welcome this! But my issues are, where will the parking lot be, to put that theater in an area like where the cinema is. Where will we park our vehicles. In this country now we cannot park certain places in the daylight let alone at night!!!
Vote Pringle for PM so that he can finish the UPP CAN’T PARK at East Bus Station!!
I for one will be looking forward to this as it would do much in advancing Antigua and our culture as a whole.
Lol hahahaha another talk shop. Nothing to be had. Just to tantalize and amaze.
Oh where, oh where have I heard this before?
Hmmm let me think 🤔
In December 2018, an announcement was made that the Government has completed the purchase of the cinema and that the Ministry of Culture would take occupancy from January 1st 2019. That was over seven years ago. Whilst I welcome the news that work is set to begin on transforming the cinema into the National Performing Arts Centre, I hope this is more than just talk and a public relations stunt this time around.
Very bad location for a Performing Arts Centre. Where is the parking? What happened to the House of Culture and the Old Parliament Building? Certainly one of them could be repurposed or rebuilt.
Also the building on hospital hill that is university centre and was long ago extra mural would be an idea location for a Performing Arts Centre and lots of safe parking.
Just wish the government would do proper planning.
