Antigua and Barbuda– In a compelling appeal, newly graduated gynecologist Dr. Eldean Eudelle is highlighting the vital importance of Pap smears for women throughout the twin-island nation. With cervical cancer being one of the top causes of cancer-related fatalities among women in the Caribbean, the need for early detection through routine screenings is more critical than ever.

Dr. Eudelle emphasizes that the Pap smear, also known as the Pap test, is a crucial procedure for identifying abnormal cervical cells that could potentially lead to cancer. He advises that women aged 21 and older should start regular screenings to facilitate early detection and prevention of cervical cancer.

Dr. Eudelle stated, “Cervical cancer is largely preventable with consistent screenings and proper management. The Pap smear is a straightforward, quick, and painless test that can save lives. It is essential for women to take this step seriously.”

He expressed concern that many women in Antigua and Barbuda are not utilizing this essential health service, often due to misunderstandings, fear, or a lack of awareness. He encourages women to overcome the stigma associated with Pap smears and to appreciate their importance in maintaining reproductive health:

1. Early Detection: Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in its initial stages. Regular Pap smears can identify changes in cervical cells long before they progress to cancer, enabling timely intervention.

2. Empowerment : Being informed about one’s health status empowers women to make educated decisions regarding their healthcare. Regular screenings can promote proactive health management and lifestyle choices.

3. Community Health: By prioritizing Pap smears, women play a role in reducing health disparities in the community and ensuring equal access to essential health services for all women.

Dr. Eudelle recommends that women start Pap smear screenings at age 21 and continue every three years until age 29. For women between 30 and 65, he suggests a Pap smear combined with an HPV test every five years. Women over 65 should consult their healthcare providers regarding the necessity of ongoing screenings based on their medical history.

To increase awareness, Dr. Eudelle calls on local health organizations to conduct workshops and information sessions to educate women about the significance of Pap smears. These efforts aim to dispel myths, address concerns, and motivate women to take control of their health.

“Let’s unite as a community and support each other in prioritizing our health. Encourage friends and family to schedule their Pap smears, and let’s foster a culture that celebrates and prioritizes women’s health,” Dr. Eudelle concluded.

  1. why are people always telling women what to do with their bodies? In 2024 it’s still a man’s world eh?

  2. The doctor is advising women to undergo screening to detect a virus that can cause cancer, women can take his free advice or leave it.

    Use your brain please.

  3. The body is capable of taking care of itself, and if the body is norished well and has its correct pH balance there is no room for cancer. Cancer trives on sugar, processed foods, and some of us eating the wrong things. Everything coming out of a tin, plastic bag, a box etc. So how we expect out bodies to function well.We have so much on the island to do this, eating Cassi, spinache, drinking our natural bush teas, too much to mention etc. I don’t like the scare tactic at all. Eat leavy greens, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds . Stop eating pasta, drinking sugary drinks, and cooking with vegetables oil, corn oil, canola oil,soy oil, margarine, Maggie cubes, sazon, seasonings with msg(mono sodium gulmate), use natural seasoning, stop cooking in Aluminum pots, stainless steel is better, cast iron pots, clay pots, and stop eating and drinking out of foam plates and cups. Stop drinking cow’s milk. Use olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter can be eaten. Hello this from Africa. Oh yes you can eat shea butter, it’s so good for the body. We are a loss people, but we can be enlightened if we look in the right places. Concerned.

  4. Eating healthy is the answer, no paps smear is needed, some people don’t know ,so they need to be enlightened. Cancer is loves sugar and instead of we stop doing what’s harmful to the body, we go to a doctor for a pill to fix the issues of health. Natural healthy eating, getting exercise, and drinking adequate water, rest early, get lots of rest , and relax. We should not be asking who got brains or not.
