Wind Turbine Installation in the Parham Ridge Area and Sir Vivian Richards Stadium

9

As part of the “Sustainable Pathways” Protected Area and Renewable Energy” Project, the Department of Environment of Antigua and Barbuda will provide clean, sustainable power generated through the use of 11-15 small wind turbines to the Crabbs reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant and Sir Vivian Richard Stadium. This power will be utilized to ensure the reverse osmosis plant can continue to function even in the event of an electrical grid failure.

The turbines being utilized are Vergnet 275kW hurricane resistant wind turbines. They reach a maximum height of 70 meters (at the tip of the blades). Each turbine has been delivered with noise reduction technology to ensure minimal impact on local homeowners, land users, and wildlife. Even when generating at full capacity, the turbines will be no louder than an average conversation at 250 meters.

In the very near future, survey teams from the Ministry of Works will be conducting surveys at the Parham Ridge site. The Department of Environment kindly asks to take note.

  1. Renewable systems cannot run the RO plant without energy storage. The environment division should employ competent engineers to advise them before making suggestions that are not logical

    • What has made you conclude they will operate without battery? My understanding is this is the Greentech deal and it was made clear:

“It’s definitely a different mix of the technologies as well, so in Cayman it’s just solar, but here in Antigua it’s going to be a combination of solar, wind, and battery systems, so it differs in that regard as far as the energy mix, and like I said it’s about twice the scale of what’s in Cayman right now,” said Mr. Whittaker, speaking from Antigua Wednesday (9 May.)” see LOCAL FIRM INKS $20M RENEWABLE ENERGY DEAL WITH ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA GOV’T May 9th 2018

  2. At least it will produce power wise there is wind it will also have protection build in when the power is of it will shut down for safe reason when running it also helps to stabilize the circuit it’s connected to
    But has to be maintained

  3. @ tenman……
It is obvious that you are not an engineer. So please do not try to debate technical issues that you know nothing about

    • Boss it’s not my fault you can’t factually deal with this issue. whether the system is grid tied or stand alone there are benefits (or a combination) Probably unlike you I have actually invested said systems. By the way yes I am indeed a engineer

      • Tenman. There is no battery system in existence today that can store the amount of energy a RO plant needs to operate for even 12 hours. This is why they have dedicated generators where power can be increased and lowered.

  4. Like every other system on Antigua, the lack of maintenance and spare parts will allow these windmills to fail within 5 years but you can bet someone in government will profit from this endeavor.
