Why Does WhatsApp Say WhatsApp From Facebook?

WhatsApp users have started to notice something different about the app – the fact that it now has Facebook’s name plastered over it.

That doesn’t relate to Facebook the social network, it related to Facebook the tech company which owns both WhatsApp and Instagram. As well as Facebook itself, of course.

A few weeks ago, Facebook announced new corporate branding as well as the decision to start adding ‘from Facebook’ to its portfolio of products. That also includes Oculus, the company responsible for futuristic VR gaming headsets.

The new ‘Facebook’ logo was announced through an official blog post alongside a GIF of it in various different colours representing the different platforms that Facebook owns.

‘We needed the wordmark to establish distinction from the Facebook app and allow for a clearer connection to the full family of technologies,’ explained Antonio Lucio, Facebook’s chief marketing officer.

‘The new brand system uses custom typography, rounded corners, open tracking and capitalization to create visual distinction between the company and the app.’

‘We designed the new company wordmark with clarity and openness in mind.’ Considering the last few years have been particularly rocky for the main Facebook app, this is likely an effective way to try and distance some parts of the business from other parts. For its part, WhatsApp as recently unleashed a slew of new features as part of various upgrades.
