Water problem continues to dominate Cabinet’s attention

CABINET NOTES:

The Cabinet held a very lengthy and involved meeting on the issue of water adequacy and the challenges which this achievement poses for the Government.

Three factors, it was agreed, have impacted potable water availability:

The availability of finance the Government has spent 3,000,000.00 on new reverse osmosis plants, new pipes , pumps and training to manage the production and distribution of reverse osmosis water that is 100% water provided to all consumers in Antigua.

A drought that has lasted ten years and is worsening has impacted the 60/40 formula (reverse osmosis/ underground surface water supplies) that had been guiding the APUA.

100 % reverse osmosis water is now required because of the persistent drought. In 2021, Antigua recorded 18 inches of rain, the lowest in 90 years. That is the result of Global Climate Change.

The covid 19 pandemic has resulted in an increase demand in water at a time when supplies have dwindled.

Water stations are outside many banks, supermarkets, government buildings, private businesses and even homes have increased demand.

Yet, the washing of automobiles, sea-craft, the ubiquity of washing machines have all added to the increase demand for water at a time when it is not raining and reverse osmosis water is the only source.

The cost of water remains at $22.00 for the first 1000 gallons consumed making APUA water the cheapest commodity one could possibly purchase.

Only 48% of the water pipes into the distribution system is built by APUA; the 52% consumed is unknown.

  1. The cost of water delivery for cistern provided by APUA is $200 for 1,000 gallons.
    Is it cheap?

  2. Did the article say the last 10 years . So 2 years under UPP there was drought and a lack of proper water distribution and the people vote them out . 8 years with ABLP and distribution has gotten worse despite the government say them spent 300 million dollars and yet the problem is still unsolved. Somebody incompetent and the voters better know 4×2 = 8 so they better not be the incompetent ones to keep them another year. ABLP GOT TO GO.

  3. Well reasoned.

I HAVE THREE NUMBERS FOR GASTON THAT PEOPLE SHOULD REPEAT CONSTANTLY:

    H_2_O (NO WATER)
    500 (500 EMPTY PROMISES)
C_10 H_5_CIN_2 (CHEMICAL FORMULA FOR TEARGAS)

    DON’T EVER FORGET

  4. UNKNOWN: Only 48% of the water pipes into the distribution system is built by APUA; the 52% consumed is unknown. UNKNOWN? What do you guys KNOW? How can this information be UNKNOWN? HOW? SO We don’t know who built 52% of what we have? Please do not tell anyone else.

  5. The government built an osmosis plant at Pidgeon beach, upon completion, they lowered water pressure in the area with the consequence that water does not come up Monks hill or Piccadilly and i have not received water since. I am now forced to buy water at $200 per 1000 gallons instead of $22 dollars from the government. I have in writing a letter from the water manager Mr. Ian Lewis dated Nov. 24 2020 which said that the pumps have arrived and that they will schedule the work to have it operational by the end of December 2020, and here we are 18months later, and still no pumps or water to my home, a national disgrace full of empty promises

  6. “ONLY 48% OF THE WATER PIPES INTO THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IS BUILT BY APUA; THE 52% CONSUMED IS UNKNOWN”.

To the IDIOT OF A CABINET THAT IS PRESENTLY RUNNING ANTIGUA, that statement could only mean one of two things:

    (1) 52% of the water is being stolen (who really believes that) or

    (2) 52% of the water is being lost to LEAKING god-damn PIPES (the most likely scenario).

    What a bunch of idiots.
