Two of Antigua and Barbuda’s leading Warri players have been appointed cultural ambassadors as part of efforts to preserve and promote the traditional game and its cultural significance.
Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant said Cabinet approved the appointments in recognition of the players’ longstanding contributions to the game.
“The cabinet also appointed internationally acclaimed Warri players, Trevor Simon and Terence Kambui-Charles, as cultural ambassadors in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of the traditional game of Wari,” Merchant said.
He said the appointments highlight the importance of maintaining cultural traditions that are deeply rooted in the country’s history.
“Cabinet commended both men for their unwavering commitment and dedication to the development of Warri… a historical and culturally significant game, deeply rooted in African heritage,” he said.
Wari, regarded as one of the oldest strategy games in the world, has long been part of Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural fabric, particularly in rural communities.
Officials say the ambassadors will play a key role in promoting the game locally and internationally, while also encouraging younger generations to engage with the tradition.
“The appointment acknowledged a pivotal role… in advancing the sport locally, regionally, and internationally, as well as their continued effort to ensure its transmission to members of the young generation,” Merchant said.
The move forms part of a wider push by the government to strengthen cultural preservation and integrate heritage into national development and tourism initiatives.

A recognition long overdue. I would like to congratulate the Warri Society for having taking Antigua and Barbuda out there in the world of Warri as a country to be recon with. Warri may be the eldest game in the world. Very strange therefore that Antigua and Barbuda has produced the best Warri players in the world. Some would say a game more strategic then Chess.
I like and love this appointment. Not the previous one, Jamaican, unknown to me, artist. But this one is also unknown to me but I agree with because there are no conflicts of interest. He is Antigua and Barbuda and will focus on Antigua and Barbuda.
