A Virgin Atlantic flight bound for London was forced to return to Antigua after Heathrow Airport unexpectedly closed late last night.

The aircraft, carrying 234 passengers and crew, landed safely at V.C. Bird International Airport around 4 a.m. The closure, caused by a major power outage, has affected Terminals 2 and 4 and left over 5,000 homes nearby without electricity.

Airport officials have suspended operations for Friday, disrupting more than 1,350 flights. Virgin Atlantic has cancelled all Heathrow services until at least 5:30 p.m. EST on March 21 and advised passengers to avoid the airport. British Airways has issued a similar warning.

  1. I would rather be safe than sorry. If the captain had carried on knowing there was danger, then I would be mad .
The fire was really bad, thousands of people lost power to their homes .
Thank goodness, so far we haven’t heard of fatalities.

  2. I was a passenger on the plane, we were approximately 4 hours into a 7.5 hour flight, So half way.
Upon return the passengers and crew were delayed 24 hours, during this time local resources were being used which were additional spend in the Island. Also the airport would have received large payments
