PM Browne Accuses Some Teachers of Political Activism Amid Ongoing Strikes

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has accused a faction of public school teachers of using industrial action as a tool for political activism.

Speaking on his Pointe FM radio show, Browne claimed that some educators aligned with the Opposition United Progressive Party were deliberately seeking to tarnish the country’s image.

He said these individuals had openly declared their political affiliations.

Teachers in Antigua and Barbuda have staged multiple strikes in recent months over unresolved disputes with the government.

  1. Political activist what!! Teachers want their monies you wicked man. From since 2018, 7 years of waiting. Who making our children suffer? You wicked man. Give the prople the money they done work for. Stand firm!

All politician got their increase and backpay forthwith. You wicked wicked wicked man

  2. Govt owes people even prior to 2018 and at this point I’m sure they are going to write off that as they typically do. All that happen to them is that usually when they finally decide to pay after years of waiting, they up and decide to give a whole batch regardless of how long they waiting 3-6 months backpay and thr union is holding the govt accountable for all the years of backpay that they owe teachers and not taking no pittance from them. Ministers just gone in and gave themselves an increase. How long did they wait before they made sure they got their backpay. Ministers who drive govt vehicles, don’t pay home utility bills and work for far more money than masses, are also appointed to boards were they collect large sums are really crying foul on teachers for nearly a decade’s worth of backpay that they can use to feed their families and take care of the same nation’s children they are being accused of not caring about. Teachers who relentlessly take out their pockets to give children breakfast and lunch, buy uniform, socks and school supplies when parents jus bark them out the house because thr govt say they must be in school. That all when strike going on still see to it that their students who are prepping exams are being taken care of. When still stay back after school and come out weekends to give extra sessions are being called wicked because govt has sat for years and refused to ensure that they being paid appropriately. They are not asking for a raise, they are simply asking the govt the pay them the monies govt agreed to pay them as members of this “noble” profession. Because clearly teachers are only noble when you can ride them out for more they are worth.

Our ministries are very disconnected from the realities of the classroom.

Teacher teach without resources and it out the same money that you are paying them they dig into to provide resources to enhance learning and yet these are the people you call wicked for holding accountable for the monies you should have paid them since 7 years ago.

As far as I see it, it our ministers in the callous behaviour that do not care about our teachers and children of our nation.

  3. It’s about time that someone confronted the bully head on. He’s presently highly stressed and probably needs an increased dose of his prescribed meds. If his supposedly $2400 for six teachers is so paltry, why not make the payments so that the students he is so concerned about can resume their classes? Bullies are very irrational people and we see that in him at every turn.

  4. Pay de ppl.and dem everything is about opposition the nation is tired of u pay de ppl dem n stop capping
