University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has called a news conference for Wednesday (June 26) to make announcements on the UWI Campus in Antigua and Barbuda.

It is widely expected that Sir Hilary will formally announce UWI’s approval of Antigua and Barbuda as fourth landed campus of the university.

The media conference will be streamed live via UWItv from the Regional HQ.

On October 30, 2017, at a special meeting of University Council, a presentation was made by The Honourable Steadroy Benjamin, Deputy Prime Minister and Attorney General of Antigua and Barbuda indicating the desire of that country to host the 4th landed campus of The UWI. Read more

The decision stemming from the 2017 meeting authorised Vice-Chancellor Beckles to establish a Task Force to examine and evaluate the financial, operational and strategic viability and the sustainability of the establishment of a campus of 4th landed campus. The Council also delegated responsibility to the University’s Finance and General Purpose Committee (UF&GPC) to provide oversight, management and monitoring of the work of the Task Force and prepare a submission of its findings to the meeting of the Council, scheduled for April 2019.

The Task Force comprising University officials, students and other stakeholders—to conduct a feasibility study, examine and evaluate the financial, operational and strategic viability and the sustainability of the establishment of the new campus—was chaired by Pro Vice-Chancellors Alan Cobley and Densil Williams. It delivered its report to the Meeting of University Council held in April 2019. The recommendation to Council was that a Campus should be established.

The governments of the region and other stakeholders have endorsed the recommendation of the Task Force as part of a strategy to enhance more affordable university education in the OECS sub region.

  1. I can’t see how a University can open here within a few weeks. Surely another year will be needed, unless I’m missing something???

  2. This is really great opportunity for Antigua and Barbuda. I just hope that UWI-Antigua offers good masters and PhD opportunities here. Perhaps we can have graduate degrees offered here that focus on government, international relations and business strategy/finance.

Also, I hope PM Browne is super-careful about the finances of the campus and ensures that UWI pays its fare share, since it is getting a campus for free. Usually most global universities have to pay big $ to open a new campus, UWI is getting this one completely free.

  3. @Cemle, you might have missed something. I university is made up of colleges. We already have some and just needs to expand. Once it gains full accreditation for the various programs, we good to go.

Congrats to us as Antiguans and I hope the younger generation make full use of it. I wish i could have saved money and gain my degree locally in my time.

  4. I welcome the 4th UWI Landed Campus in Antigua and Barbuda it was long overdue. Everything here are so expensive. I am waiting to see how affordable this university will be for the poor people pickney.
