A team of doctors introduced to the government by Ambassador Gilbert Boustany have been given “verbal approval” on constructing a wellness project in the Coolidge area.

According to the government, their object is to promote medical tourism to Antigua by high-end earners from the USA, the Middle East, South America and Europe; the project does not anticipate receiving any patients from Antigua.

The Medotel (medical-hotel) project will cost more than US$350 million dollars to construct and to equip with the most sophisticated equipment, a Cabinet statement revealed.

It said the project will train and employ hundreds of specialist nurses, administrative staff, and other kinds of hospitality workers in order to serve the steady flow of customer/patients that are expected to fly to Antigua for treatment, year-round.

“The Cabinet verbally agreed to the broad terms of a Memorandum of Understanding; the project’s lawyer, present during the Cabinet presentation, will draft the MOU, and a sub-committee of Cabinet will review the same and sign on behalf of its members. If all goes as planned, construction is likely to begin before the end of 2019 and be completed within eighteen months.”

  2. Who is foolish enough to start pumping 350 million into a private hospital based on a verbal agreement?. As for the medical side of things high end earners already use the services of the world’s top doctors, surgeons and medical teams in USA, UK, EUROPE and these long established and proven facilities do not exclude Antiguans.
