Runway incident causes minimal impact to flight operations at VC Bird International Airport
VC Bird International fully operational
1st April, 2024…Flights in and out of the VC Bird International Airport continue to operate normally and on schedule following an incident late Sunday afternoon where asphalt fragments of the runway were dislodged during the departure of a commercial carrier.
The maintenance crew was immediately mobilised following the incident, which did not cause any major or negative impact to flight operations at the airport.
The work to repair the affected area of the runway continued well into the night on Monday and is now fully completed.
To allow for the corrective maintenance to move ahead speedily, the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority reduced the declared runway operation distances to keep flight arrivals and departures on schedule during the course of Monday.
Minister of Aviation, the Hon. Charles Fernandez, who was at the airport on Sunday to get an up-close assessment of the damage, commended the team at the airport and the Ministry of Works for their speedy and professional attention to the incident.
The runway was closed at 5pm today (Monday 1st April) local time to allow the Ministry of Works to gain unimpeded access tocomplete the corrective maintenance work. The runway reopened at 7:30pm on Monday night.

Great work team, keep the traffic flowing 💪
Now if only public works worked like this on the nation’s roads, I’d be a very happy young man!
Me tired but bump, hole, and crack!
This government needs to go.
By the way any asphalt leave back to patch that area that APUA dug across on the road leading to Cedar Valley intersection?
The Government needs to go because a commercial flight took off Sunday and the jet blast damaged the runaway and by Monday evening it was fixed by the Authority and Public Works – BUT you’re saying the government that acted so efficiently should go?
Crazy people
