The long-delayed resurfacing of the runway at VC Bird International Airport is expected to start before the end of the year.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that a $100 million loan has been secured from a consortium of banks led by CIBC Caribbean, part of which will fund the expansion of the Barbuda runway.
The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) is preparing tender documents, with plans to open the project for tendering soon.
Contractor selection is anticipated by September, with work beginning in November.
The runway, last resurfaced in 2008, requires updates every ten years per international standards.
Delays occurred in 2018-19 and were worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this year, emergency repairs were made due to asphalt erosion from a 777 aircraft landing, necessitating temporary airport closure.
The 3,038-meter (over 9,000 feet) runway resurfacing will be done during nightly airport closures, expected to take about a year.
