As a result of the Government’s vaccination mandate, the Ministry of Education reports there is now a shortfall of 109 teachers in the public-school system.
In order to fill the gap left by educators who refuse to take the COVID-19 vaccine, the Cabinet has authorized the three-month hiring of that number of substitute teachers.
Reports say that, according to their skills, the Ministry’s management team will assign these persons to the affected schools.
Meanwhile, based on the vulnerability of primary-school children, and according to data regarding the vaccination of their teachers, primary schools will continue with remote learning.
In the meantime, the Executive has vowed to fix the inadequacy of Internet access across the country.
Complaints have been raised by many families about the challenges they face in accessing reliable Internet services, even when devices are available.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas had promised, at the close of the last school year, that broadband Internet would be installed in the government schools by September. (REAL NEWS)

Those that has not been vaccinated are not paid from 1st October, so those salaries will go to the SUBSTITUTE teachers.

What the government is doing by not allowing the primary schools to be open is a mejor mistake.
Why? Simply because they know and we know that there is NO a vaccine for for that age group as yet.
And on top of that they are the age group that has the less percentage to get covid. I am not saying that they will not get covid, but that they have less chance.
But I honestly don’t know who the person that is advising the government on this.
We need a government that thinks for the people rather than for their money.

Oh the vaccine for 5-11 years old is on the table seeking authorisation as we speak. In person classes for that cohort will be the bait to coerce parents into vaccinating these little children. The FDA already approved a blood thinning medication for children…Pradaxa. And the CDC has already warned hospitals to look out for children coming in with symptoms of acute flaccid myelitis (use to be called polio) Want to know what side effect from Pfizer vaccine fits that description….Gilliam Barre Syndrome.

I hope Gaston Browne aint think that within the twinkling of an eye he is gonna then come and say restrictions lifted as a means of curry favoring the electorate. This whole approach to curfew and continued restrictions make absolutely no sense. Many countries the world over have come to the realisation that there aint no thing as preventing covid. To continue holding the people and their livelihood at ransom is plain out WRONG. CMO if indeed you are the buck stopper DONT YOU HAVE A CONSCIENCE. I prefer our children not to be infected by selfish so called educators. There are mandates on the book already about vaccines for the same schools that they work already. They lacks credibility and have no morality to talk about vaccines. Honestly they are sanctimonious hypocrites.
@ Colombo – You really should refrain from labeling people selfish, you might need to pick the beam out your own eyes. If the teachers dont want a vaccine in their body, they should have the right to that. They have been teaching every body kids for years, alot of whom with grow up and work for bigger salaries than them, is that a selfish behaviour?
Some persons will choose to take the vaccine in time, they may have questions or concerns. Nobody deserve to be mandated to take a vaccine. You cannot compare this vaccine to those others that we have taken as kids – those have been tested for decades and have proven to safe – you really cannot equate them.
Spare me….we all evolved and do make changes in educating people. What’s more important than lives? This Virus is seriously deadly and have killed 90+plus or our people. We can’t afford for our children to get infected and die before a few so called educators decide they don’t want to a vaccine that will save lives. Mandates don’t means forcing but there are consequences for your own behavior. They do have a choice not to follow any rules established by their employer then they stay out of the classroom. Vaccines have always save lives. Do you know that these same teachers go doctors when they are illnesses and take medications etc without asking a question? I am sure most of them are vaccinated, some of bleach, some inject themselves with all sorts of enhancers etc. Selfishly pretending to be conscious. Again, the Children lives are more important than a few selfish teachers. You people would be the first to cry Wolfe Jah forbid if one of our children get infected by a teacher and die. I call it as I see it.

Which would only happen to 5 -8% of the persons who catches it anyway without the vaccine. So stop spreading that misinformation about infected by unvaccinated because the real super spreaders are the Vaccinated that walk around untested and unchecked while they carry similar viral load especially with the Delta Variant

Do you know that the majority of deaths (90%) in Wadadli from this deadly Virus is the unvaccinated. You are free to choose. For the love of the Children protect them. Our children will suffer in the long run because the teachers that were fired, I am sure were well qualified and perhaps have many years of teaching experiences.
What are these substitutes coming with? Would like to know their qualifications. If these substitutes were waiting in line for a teaching position, I am sure there was a valid reason why the MoE never hired them before now. We always had teacher shortage so why did they not hire them before? Looking for real answers. Is it because they weren’t suited to teach?
Now a position opens and it’s all about money, never mind the fact that the students need a quality education. Will they be getting it from these substitutes? I am so sorry for parents who have children in the public schools in Antigua. Year after year the scores coming in from pubic schools after the grade 6 national assessment are a DISGRACE. There needs to be a shake down at the ministry from top to bottom. Our children deserve better!
Don’t the so called conscious teachers have some role in the poor results? The people in the ministry don’t teach. Point the fingers where it’s belongs. We have this tendency to blame other’s for our own failures. Most of us don’t take responsibility for nothing that goes wrong.
