The deployment of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines in countries across the Americas including Antigua and Barbuda under the World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility is anticipated to get under way by the end of March.
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director, Dr. Carissa Etienne, made the disclosure during a digital media briefing on Wednesday (January 13).
An initial two billion vaccine doses have already been secured from Pfizer Inc. under COVAX for distribution globally in 2021, with another 1.3 billion programmed for 2022.
The two billion doses are expected to cover the first phase of the vaccination rollout targeting 20 per cent of beneficiary countries’ vulnerable populations, including healthcare workers, persons with underlying conditions, and the elderly.
Pfizer is also expected to provide one million vaccines to be used in some regional countries under a proposed pilot arrangement in February.
Dr. Etienne said the COVAX Facility will provide access to a basket of 15 vaccines, noting that the Pfizer vaccine is the only one already prequalified by the WHO.
Pfizer was issued with a licence to facilitate emergency use of the vaccine, which has already been distributed in a number of countries globally.
Dr. Etienne further pointed out that there are mote than 100 additional vaccine candidates in the COVAX Facility pipeline.
“We are not sure that all of them are going to be approved, but it is encouraging to see that so many vaccines are in development. With one vaccine approved for use by the WHO and more on the way, we are moving closer to controlling this pandemic,” she added.
Meanwhile, the number of vaccine manufacturers attaining prequalification and emergency licensing under the COVAX Facility could shortly increase to at least three.
“Moderna will… probably… be the second one in a couple of days,” said PAHO Assistant Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, adding that AstraZeneca “is also providing all the documentation to be the third”.
Dr. Barbosa said WHO has also commenced prequalification negotiations with the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia, which manufactured the Sputnik V vaccine, and Chinese biopharmaceutical company, Sinovac, manufacturers of the Coronavac vaccine.
“They will share documentation and critical data about critical phase-one, two and three clinical trials,” he indicated.
Dr. Barbosa noted that this information is required of all vaccine producers interested in participating in the COVAX Facility. “We have had conversations with… around 16 producers and all will need to be assessed by exactly the same criteria,” he pointed out.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 39 million persons across the Americas have been infected, and more than 925,000 have died.

Antigua acquires Industrial freezers to store COVID-19 vaccines upon arrival in Antigua

Cabinet Notes: The Minister of Health provided the Cabinet with an update on the novel Coronavirus vaccine which is closer to being mass-distributed in several developed countries, including the U.K., the USA, Russia, China and the European Union.
Antigua and Barbuda through the COVACS arrangement has already paid for 20,000 vials of vaccine, although it has not yet been decided which of the vaccines is likely to be purchased by the Pan American Health Organization for distribution to its members.
Nevertheless, several industrial freezers have been acquired and are being readied to store the vaccines upon their arrival in Antigua. Again it was repeated that a priority list of voluntary recipients is being tweaked to include First Responders, fragile and elderly residents, hospital staff, and those most at risk of contraction. Parliamentarians are also included.
The number of active cases of patients being treated for the novel Coronavirus remains at 7 even though there are two newly confirmed cases; three patients received a second negative within a one-week period and are therefore regarded as cured.
Everyone is encouraged to be vigilant, to wear masks, to engage in social distancing, and to sanitize hands and door knobs/rails and frequently touched objects as often as possible. There has been no community spread of the virus, and the USA’s CDC has rated Antigua and Barbuda as “moderate risk” given the nation’s success at managing this global crisis.

Just saying, what do you want to bet that in a few weeks we are told these freezers don’t work. Was The government quick to say they acquired them because someone got a payoff? Note Jamaica isn’t wasting money on freezers but instead sourcing vaccines that don’t need refrigeration. You are right this is our incompetent government at work.

Why would the government get vaccines that are required to be kept at minus seventy degrees? We don’t even have reliable electricity. Why not wait for the one out of Britain that doesn’t need refrigeration. We should be sceptical of any vaccine that will alter our RNA and developed by a Biotech company. What will be the long term effect of having a foreign entity in our bodies?
Someone said that after 40 years of research there is no vaccine for HIV and after 100 years there is no vaccine for cancer. Ongoing research, and no vaccine for the common cold which by the way has kills more people annually than covid. But in less than a year we have a vaccine for covid with the help of a biotech firm. Go figure.

You can shove the Russian and Chinese vaccine where the sun don’t shine. I wouldn’t trust either of these. I’ll wait for the Pfizer, Modrena or the Oxford-Astrazenica. I wouldn’t trust anything that comes out of Russai or China.
I would say maybe we could give consideration to the Russian vaccine. It is now being given in some South American countries, so we may soon hear about any issues with it.
As for Oxford-AstraZeneca, I believe one of the places where trials were conducted was South Africa and that country is now contending with the highest number of covid19 cases in Africa.
