Earthquake Swarm Recorded East of Barbuda: UWI Seismic Research Centre Urges Preparedness

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) has reported an earthquake swarm east of Barbuda that occurred between November 15 and 19, 2024.

The swarm, which began at 5:11 PM on November 15, included a total of 82 recorded events, with two reaching a magnitude of 4.8—the strongest in the sequence.

Seven of the tremors were large enough to be felt, while the majority measured below magnitude 2.9, falling under the threshold for the SRC’s regular social media updates.

The SRC highlighted the region’s status as one of the Caribbean’s more seismically active zones, stressing the importance of earthquake preparedness.

In a social media post over the weekend, the SRC reminded the public to “Prepare, plan, and practice” for potential earthquakes of any size.

Auto-generated solutions tracking the events were shared online, further emphasizing the need for increased awareness and readiness in vulnerable communities.

Seismic activity in this region underscores the importance of ongoing education and outreach on earthquake preparedness.

Residents in Barbuda and surrounding areas are urged to have emergency plans in place, ensure their homes and businesses are earthquake-safe, and stay informed about seismic activity updates from trusted sources like the UWI Seismic Research Centre.

  1. Buildings kill people not the actual quake. Get out and get out fast. Don’t stand close to buildings especially tall concrete ones.
Are they still teaching school children to hide under a desk!!!!! So crazy.
