UWI Five Islands to Graduate Record 200 Students in October
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus will graduate about 200 students in October, more than double last year’s 98 graduates, Principal Professor Justin Robinson said Thursday.
Addressing the 2025 matriculation ceremony, Robinson called the achievement a “record number” and said it reflected the institution’s rapid expansion since opening in 2019.
“As we welcome a record number of new students, on October 11 we will also graduate a record number,” he told the gathering.

The principal noted that enrolment currently stands at 1,323, up 21 percent from last year, and is projected to surpass 1,500 with the January intake.
A total of 443 students were admitted from a record pool of 750 applicants, leaving about 40 percent of hopefuls without places.
Robinson used the occasion to urge students to take seriously both the privilege and responsibility of entering UWI.
He said the Caribbean faces what he described as a “quiet crisis” of youth unemployment, with one in four young people unable to find work and young women hit hardest.
“Unemployment among young females is on average 30 percent or higher, and when they do find work, they earn 20 percent less than their male counterparts for identical jobs,” he said.
He challenged the new cohort to become “the architects of a Caribbean transformation” by thinking globally while acting locally, rejecting inequality, and becoming job creators rather than only job seekers.
“The person beside you needs to be the innovator who breaks our region’s cycle of inequality, the entrepreneur who creates thousands of jobs for Caribbean youth, or the leader who finally unlocks the potential trapped in our islands for far too long,” Robinson said.
The ceremony also marked the arrival of 27 police officers from St. Vincent and the Grenadines who enrolled in a criminology and criminal justice degree offered in their home country, part of what Robinson described as the campus’s commitment to flexible and relevant programming.
Robinson concluded by telling students that the world would not measure them simply by their entry into UWI, but by their exit.
“The message there is we want you to get in and out,” he said, urging timely completion and graduation.
