Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies Sir Hilary Beckles has hailed as “an historic moment” the inaugural UWI Five Islands Campus Council.

The meeting was held online due to the ongoing state of emergency and 24-hour curfew.

“It was UWI solidarity in the worst of times,” Beckles said in a note to students using the UWI Banner communications system.

Five Islands Professor Principal Stafford and his team presented an excellent report on their stewardship of the Five Islands Campus, according to Sir Hilary.

“I was moved to eye moisture by the summary statement presented by Council Chairman, Aziz Hadeed as he spoke of the power of the UWI to uplift and propel our people and the joy he feels as a private sector businessman being part of a public academic enterprise.”

Last week the guild presidents of the five campuses and the principals also participated in a discussion on the COVID-19 virus.

UWI is set to re-open on Tuesday via online teaching after a one month closure.
