UWI Five Islands Campus Officially Opens

The University of the West Indies (UWI) held its ceremonial opening of the UWI’s fourth landed campus, Five Islands and hundreds of attendees including residents, alumni and faculty members of the University of the West Indies (UWI) turned out to celebrate a proud moment in the history of Antigua and Barbuda.

At the formal opening, Minister of Education Michael Browne reflected on how much was endured to achieve the significant milestone.

“I remember we came down to crunch time and coming down to crunch time there oftentimes where many of you like me that time, recognized that you need the closure, you needed that final voice. The reality is it doesn’t matter how polished a diamond looks in the end a diamond has to go through struggle,” Browne said.

Additionally he explained that the university is the government’s fulfillment of its mandate to build an economic powerhouse.

“The history of the University of the West Indies, the history of the people of Antigua and Barbuda and the Eastern Caribbean and by broader extension the Caribbean, married to the vision of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and government and people of Antigua and Barbuda produces and births a vision. That vision captured in very, very simple words: Our country shall and must be an economic powerhouse.”

The historic celebration was also observed in the presence of Professor Sir Hilary Beckles who remarked that the occasion merely signified a responsibility to the people of the Caribbean.

Beckles also urged that the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda ensure that atleast one member of every family goes to the university and get a university education.

Reacting to the official opening, Director of Academic Affairs at UWI Five Islands Campus, Hyram Forde shared his view that citizens should pursue opportunities for higher education.

Forde says there are number of issues in regards to higher education particularly the course and this is why persons should look towards the entry level degrees being made available right at home: UWI Five Islands Campus.

  1. Whether you like PM Browne or what whether you don’t like him, I think everybody has to admit that he accomplished a great thing for the country. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but PM Browne also donated a big chunk of his personal wealth to UWI-Five Islands as well. Hopefully UWI will name a building at Five Islands after him or something, because he truly made this thing happen.

    • You really think gasty donated his own monies….reallllyyyy????

Its nice we have a university and yes he really pushed for it bcos he knows investors wanting to do business in ANTIGUA will donate and he can hide his “donations” there ….open your eyes to THE BUSINESS OF HAVING A UNIVERSITY …ITS A BUSINESS MOVE 101

Whatever he donates it will be returned in folds back to him its called “RI” return investment….

Overall still a good look at least parenrs wont face financial hardship sending their children to AMERICA for schooling and the hefty intersts on STUDENT LOANS…

“Beyond citing the revolutionary thinkers in our history, (that is, beyond, King Court, Henry Loving, VC Bird, George Walter, Nellie Robinson, Leonard “Tim” Hector, Baldwin Spencer, Gaston Browne, Professor Dr. Hilary Beckles) we must be prepared to act upon our interpretation of what is in the best interest of black people, that is, black people as an historically oppressed population. This is the fundamental necessity for advancing the political, (educational, socio-cultural, technological, legal and ecological) process.” – Dr. Molefi Asante!

  3. I have already suggested we need to Knight this Prime Minister even before he leaves office. There is no need to wait. H has proven himself more than once to be worthy of the title of Sir Gaston Browne.
And the way he is going V.C. will have competition very soon as Gaston will be the Son of the Nation.

    • Knighted for huffing a secondary school that was not built under him?? Really?? Let him complete YIDA and a few others that he started, that would have proven to bring real benifits to the country over time then you can talk about knighthood. Meanwhile get ready to pay your increase taxes to fulfil his ego.

  4. Thank God I am alive to see this HISTORIC day in our nation of Antigua & Barbuda.

“Where there is no VISION, the people perish…” Proverbs 29:18

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because IT WILL SURELY COME, it will not tarry.” Habbakuk 2:3

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” James 1:17

  5. Well lard…..

Lovell next time from the beginning tell your people what your personal opinion is and let the public know, just like you did with the CCJ.

    • Lovell, next time, ignore ABLP supporters and complete your project. We could have had the Beaches hotel that went to Grenada, if you had not listen to them.

      • Yeah we would live beaches hotel at the cost of our abst and another IMF program. Wonder how much of Grenda’s taxes the ‘Butch’ got.
