UPP Townhall Challenges Controversial 2% ABST Hike Amidst Government’s Fiscal Struggles

2

The UPP has arranged a townhall meeting to discuss the government’s proposed 2 percent increase in the Antigua Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) in the coming year.

Scheduled after the Throne Speech by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, the meeting at Glanvilles Community Center aims to address the opposition’s concerns about the impending tax hike from 15 percent to 17 percent, set to be announced officially in the 2024 Budget presentation.

Financial Secretary Rasona Davis-Crump defended the move, citing the government’s prolonged financial deficits and the need to meet the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s tax-to-GDP target.

The proposed measures exclude zero-rated essential items like chicken, fish, butter, fresh fruits, vegetables, rice, and flour.

  1. If they want more tax revenue, tell the government to cap the Christmas ABST waiver to purchases of $5,000 or less on any one purchase. Government losing too much ABST on the sale of cars as everyone now waits for Christmas to buy cars.

  2. Gridlock: Cars should not be included in the Christmas ABST waivers.Raising the sales taxes to 19 % is a travesty.Where I am living the sales tax is 8.25 Percent. The breakdown of those taxes are as follows. The State gets 6.25 percent and the area where the goods are bought gets 2 percent. There are no Sales Taxes on food items.I can also see my Taxes at work on the Highways and more.Antigua is a very expensive place to purchase goods and services.I am speaking from personal experiences.
