The Leadership of the United Progressive Party (UPP) reiterates the Party’s support for the establishment of The University of the West Indies’ fourth landed campus in Antigua & Barbuda. Reminding the public that this national journey to higher education began with the UPP Administration, Political Leader Harold Lovell calls the opening of a university here “the fulfillment of the Party’s own ambition.”
“We support the university – whether UWI or otherwise – in Antigua, but our issue is the huffing of the Five Islands Secondary School for the university,” Lovell says. “The question in the public domain is: ‘Does the Party believe it is better to have no university rather than a university at Five Islands?’ For me, the answer is ‘No.’”
Accordingly, the Political Leader will attend the opening ceremony of the campus to publicly demonstrate his stated support. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Dr. Baldwin Spencer, under whose leadership the Five Islands Secondary School was conceptualized and built, will be unable to attend the ceremonial events since he is currently
under medical care.
However, Dr. Spencer fully endorses the presence of the UPP Leadership at the various ceremonies, calling it “an expression of the Party’s patriotism.”
Deputy Political Leader Jamale Pringle will be overseas on Sunday when the opening ceremonies begin. But he certainly would have attended the two-part celebration had he been here, he says. Along with Lovell, Party General Secretary Shawn Nicholas and Dr. Jacqui
Quinn, the UPP Minister of Education under whom construction on the Five Islands Secondary began, are “proud Pelicans” – graduates of The UWI. The two women also express strong support for their alma mater’s presence here.
Further explaining the significance of the UPP Leadership’s support is Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Leon Chaku Symister: “Our presence indicates that we are consistent. We never opposed having a university,” Symister says. “And looking to the future, the UPP
sees the need for sustainability of that university, which will need a competent government – and not a corrupt government.” The former Administration’s planning committee for the establishment of a university in Antigua & Barbuda was headed by well-known
educator Juno Samuel.

Sooooooo ummmmm beg pardon? Sooooo why did Dr J Quinn and D Giselle Isaac resign or threaten to resign? Or is your party still broken and undivided?
Lame Lovell still playing games from the same handbook?? If this is the fluke of a “leader” the UPP is looking to for guidance then they are on a sinking ship.
And what about Gisele Isaac-Arindale? Has she already submitted her watered-down resignation letter?
With or without their support, the nation moves forward anyway.
Max Hurst said if Lovell beat him in 2004 he would eat his shoes. We’re still waiting 15 years later as Max continues to eat parrot dung!
This is 2019. Playing from the same handbook is clearly NOT working for Lovell. 15 years old tactics clearly NOT helping him at the party level or national level
Is that your best rebutal?? Girl please!! face it y’all said it was not possible and we cant afford it but now it is coming to a reality u bring up a 15 year old argument??
What about LAMIN NEWTON? Can we know if he will follow suit?
The UPP is to be commended for their suppot of the new University. That is true patriotism, and is to be commended.. Forget the politics. This is part of nation building. The New Antigua is here. Forward Ever. Backwards Never. We are “workers together”.
Was this not the same Lovell that wrote to the University Chancellor not to bring the university to Antigua. Do we all suffer from amnesia. Are we all so stupid. They all fought against the ABLP plans to establish the university here at Five Island. And now that it clear that they have lost the battle they now want to take some credit that it was their plan that is now being fulfilled. Guys and girls you really have guts to come to the public to boldly. It would be better if you first admit to have been on the wrong side of history. But you guys and girls have no shame. I wonder what the chairwoman has to say about her party’s support now? What a thing. People can really sink low. Very Low.
The same thing they did with MSJMC. They fought against it and called it a white elephant and yet had no choice but to spend the money and finish what the labour party started. Whereas the ABLP called the car park a white elephant, they say they have no option but to turn it around and make the best of it. That is leadership.
You know I am all for Lovell coming out in support. Good for him. What I hate is that he takes us for fools. Own up to the fact that he didn’t support it before and then tell us why you now support it. I hate the flip-flopping in politics while thinking that we don’t have good memories.
It’s the same Lovell who went to meet with the previous Chinese ambassador (who was new to Antigua) and asked him to intervene in the matter. The ambassador told him what he should have known: diplomats do NOT get involved in local politics. How embarrassing!!! And he calls himself a lawyer.
How are the two situations so different? The only difference I see is ABLP’s failure to develop the car park a long time ago and make money from it. UPP is still against huffing the children’s school but the idea of the university is a shared one. That location is a bad one and it is going to cost much more to turn a school into a university. What do they do with the primary school close by? How do they expand? These are serious issues concerned with a university campus and will reveal themselves to be problems going forward. The university however can be relocated if it becomes necessary so no need to be against the idea of a fourth landed campus.
Hope you see the difference and not just your lame political reasoning.
Well, at least everybody is trying to come together for the benefit of our new university campus. I don’t support the UPP but at least they are trying to be nice.
BRING IN THE CLOWNS!!!
All of them?
If the UPP had even a mustard’s seed worth of fight left in them, there is no way that under the Gaston Brown ABLP administration that any executive member would attend that opening.
UPP was obviously beaten into submission and has surrendered to the ABLP administration. This move by UPP is dangerous to our democratic process.
It’s the principle behind it all UPP had people marching and picketing up and down the place for the five island Secondary School and at the very end capitulated.
Supporting the UWI is a no brainier, but utilizing a purpose built facility for a school was the stand off. Nothing has changed.
But the marching and picketing has stopped and turned into a whimper it was the UPP’s idea from inseption and the UPP started the process.
UPP should have been out in there numbers picketing at the opening that the location is not suitable.
Picketing the opening that UWI is robbing the nation of a Secondary School donated to the country by the Chinese Government.
UPP should have held there ground but instead they are going to clink glasses eat drummets, and cucumber sandwiches.
And smile for the photo. No balls, no gumshon, no guts, no fight, no direction.
The argument that a building build for a secondary school could not be turned into a university is a flawed argument and that is their biggest problem. You cannot stand on flawed arguments. And the UPP has time and time again stand on flawed arguments. And they are leading their supporters in these flawed arguments to doom. Only die hard supporters will follow them anywhere they take them. And Lovell is not a good leader. He follows more than he leads. he doesn’t realize that Antigua people have already written him off. His political career is done concerning that. all the old generals in the UPP have gone. Some silently supporting the ABLP. Cause they just don’t like what is happening in the party. If the movement tomorrow would start a party they will have more members than the UPP.
Well said (in my opinion).
I find it hard to argue against most of what you post but I reflect on King Solomon and the two ladies and the baby. What you stated is exactly what ABLP would have done-short of burning it down which is also possible-but I guess UPP took the role of the lady who was the rightful owner of the baby. In their minds they probably said, let them have it rather than destroying the whole thing, when they to envisage a university in Antigua and Barbuda.
What UPP should now do is to hold their feet to the fire that they provide for the university what they promised and argue for Antigua and Barbuda nationals to get some preferential considerations since their taxes will feature so strongly in this endeavour.
the UPP is weak and irrelevant. The last Earth-shattering, revolutionary, economy-impacting PRESS RELEASE they issued was DEMANDING THE REMOVAL OF RED PLASTIC from lamp-posts right before the Play It Out concert. If the UPP continues to issue such “meaningful” press releases, they will surely become the next government and Lovell is GUARANTEED to become Prime Minister. After all Lovell has the backbone that Gaston Browne lacks and the UPP has a VERY STRONG set of candidates who can easily defeat the ABLP 2-1. Jamale Pringle is set to become Deputy PM – just look at the strength of his presentation in our nation’s Legislature. The UPP is indeed “Ready to Govern” because “Leadership Matters” and Lovell is such a damn good leader!
LOL. Your sarcasm is killing me laughing. You really have a good sense of humor. Ever thought of doing stand up comedy?
