UPP Takes Firm Stand Against Electoral Bribery, Calls for Reform

13

The United Progressive Party (UPP) strongly condemns electoral bribery and calls for comprehensive political reform to address recent allegations of voter inducement in the October 24 by-election, where the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) was accused.

Former UPP Leader Harold Lovell highlighted the prevalence of bribery during elections, emphasizing the need to shift the political culture.

He noted that while some inducements are supply-driven, others are demand-driven, with people expecting benefits during election time.

Lovell observed that moral values prevailed among many voters during the St. Mary’s South by-election but recognized challenges in urban areas.

He called for legal protection for individuals offered bribes and proposed providing immunity for those who accept inducements with the intention to vote.

Despite existing legislation, the UPP advocates for stricter measures to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.

  1. Absolutely correct, and I would go further as well, that if any work has commenced to persuade the electorate to vote ABLP, then the work must be completed by the party – whether win or lose!

At present, I’m collating all the promises made by the ABLP during the St Mary’s South by-election to see if Gaston and Dwayne’s promises will be fulfilled.

If Prime Minister Browne claims he’s a man of INTEGRITY, then he’ll complete all his pledges/promises to the SMS constituents.

    SIMPLE REALLY …

  2. The laws to deal with these issues already exist. No reform is needed, but proper enforcement is.

I get very upset when I see articles about government or people thinking the way to solve crimes or deter crimes is to increase penalty. that is the most incompetent thing that behavioral and social experts would know.

incompetence is shown by making the statement that there must be more punishment. no matter what the punishment is, criminals commit crimes without care for the punishment. It is why, in the year 2023 that crimes still occur. are there still robbery, rape, murder, assault, arson, kidnapping, domestic abuse, battery, theft/larceny, etcetera even though there are various punishments still in existence?

So, the solution to decrease crime is not enhancing and increasing punishment, as that has no effect, but decreasing opportunities of such crime is the most effective way to decrease it. I am literally begging people to consult social and behavioral scientist before they say things that will make them look incompetent and lazy.

what on earth will adding new punishments or criminalizing other things ever done reducing deviant and criminal behavior?

you can tell that no one in Antigua and Barbuda is consulting experts and putting people with the knowledge and education where they should be.

any matter pertaining to law, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, behavior, and other social sciences, please consult me or others like me.

    before speaking.
