The World Health Organization (WHO) recently recommended that wearing face masks when in public, will help to curb the spread of COVID-19. The United Progressive Part (UPP) is in full support of this announcement and strongly urges all Antiguans and Barbudans to wear face masks if they must leave their homes.

The UPP continues to encourage persons to remain in their homes. However, if they must
venture outdoors, protective masks are strongly recommended to ensure their safety while practicing social distancing.

“Face masks are an added safety measure intended to curb the spread of the virus and we must take every precaution to protect ourselves and those around us,” said UPP Political Leader, Harold Lovell.

The The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) of the United States of America also recommends “wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain – e.g. supermarkets and pharmacies. Cloth face coverings can be made from household items or low cost materials.”

However, the CDC cautions that cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age two (2), anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The UPP also encourages local seamstresses, tailors and artisans to step up and use their
talent and creativity to join the fight against COVID 19. By donating their services and materials to help sew and stitch masks, they can do their part to assist those who do not have.

“Let us all work together, to contribute to this community effort, so that we can increase the distribution of additional masks as soon as possible, “ Lovell said.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has also begun to distribute masks to the public and the UPP applauds this initiative. The Party is hopeful that there is a strategic plan in place to ensure that the mask distribution will be done in a manner that is fair.

The Party suggests that first responders and essential workers are made a priority, as well as the less fortunate and those who use public transportation.

The UPP continues to urge all Antiguans and Barbudans to follow all of the guidelines set out by local healthcare experts, but to also review the information provided by the World Health Organisation and the CDC.

Continued adherence to proper hygiene procedures and social distancing guidelines to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 are also of critical importance in the public fight against this deadly disease.

  1. First we heard that masks don’t work unless you have it. Then we heard that you have to have a “special” type of mask as all others are ineffective. Now we are to use simple fabric masks made out of literally anything. To go from one extreme to the other. Why do I feel like in the next couple weeks that we are going to be hearing another story? Next we are all to wear goggles as the masks won’t protect the virus from getting into our eyes.

Then Trump says to use a malaria treatment drug that most studies have shown is non effective and the world starts stockpiling it. Then we hear rumor that he was paid to endorse it and probably has shares in the company who manufactures it. I throw my hands up in the air to be honest.

We won’t know if you are coming or going next. Just saying…

  2. Where is JAMAL PRINGLE, the LEADER of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition??? Harry is not an elected official, holds no office. Shouldn’t the official opposition be making these kinds of declarations for their Party? He’s the highest elected official they have. Harry is just a private citizen and hold no office. We need to hear from the LEADER of the Opposition. Thank you.

  3. I watch around the world as leaders misled the people, one time they say only those who are sick should ware mask, they also said that people should not stockpile supplies and food. If you are on 24 hours curfew, how hell are you going to get supplies if you didnot stockpile it in the first place. Buttomline is during time of crisis don’t listen to the government follow your guts.
