UPP says campaign promises doable

United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Harold Lovell says the measures he announced last week to ease the cost of living for residents can work.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the UPP’s plans to reduce the fuel variation, lower the prices and the pump and slash corporate tax in half will collapse the economy.

The heads of three government departments have also warned against implementing the plans announced by the UPP.

But addressing a rally in Potters tonight, Lovell yet again defended the UPP’s economic policies saying they are “doable.”

The UPP leader said he has no apology for announcing the reduction of gasoline to $10 a gallon “because its going to benefit everybody.”

The government is predicting a $40 million drop in revenue if a UPP government reduces gas prices.

“That same money is going back into the economy” Lovell, a former finance minister said.

“It is not only going to bring relief, it is also an economic stimulus,” he added.

On the reduction of fuel vararion by 25 per cent Lovell said “we know it can be done.”

APUA says the measure will cripple its cash flow.

But Lovell told supporters that the reduction in fuel surcharge will make it easier for residents to pay their bill and in turn, this will improve APUA cash flow.

The fuel surcharge is a main determinant in the cost of electricity to consumers.

“How can it make sense to have the price so high that you have to be locking off people current,” he said.

“When we are elected, I give you a solemn assurance that it will be done,” the UPP leader insisted.

  1. Lovell will be the next Prime Minister on March 22. Antigua and Barbuda will be on a path of recovery!

  2. I guess in a make believe dolly house world everything is doable. When you dealing with real live economy it’s a different thing. That is why we got to the IMF. Because UPP gave away all our taxes to Butch and in order to please the many supporters for handouts they bankrupted many of the Statutory and State Owned Corporations such as PDV Caribe. A company that was suppose to be a cash cow. Bankrupt. Transport Board another cash cow, bankrupt. APUA and the IMobile unit. bankrupt. Everything went bankrupt under these guys. The entire country went bankrupt and ended in the sweet arms of the IMF. Well sorry guys we ain’t going back there again.

  3. It’s soooooo sad….mad… crazy….. loco….. That the UPPITES still don’t remember the results of what transpired under Mr Lovell as ministry of finance…but I guess when you are blinded politically… wow. However, again I repeat most Antiguans and Barbudans are not foolie anymore..so on March 21st we put this madness once for all to rest… Just wait and see.

  4. It is really amazing how Harold Lovell talks. He is acting like his party was not in power for 10 long hard years. He is acting like his party did not say they go remove the “wicked fuel variation tax” but instead kept rising it. Who is this huy really trying to fool. Please after the UPP loses at the polls the 21st of March go beg Miss Massiah for forgiveness and let her lead the UPP. Maybe she will bring back some of the stalwarts who left.
