Grateful UPP lauds Cuba for its contributions to Antigua and Barbuda and to the Party
The United Progressive Party (UPP) extends its profound gratitude, admiration, and respect to the hundreds of medical professionals who have served the Nation of Antigua and Barbuda through the generous assistance of the Government and People of the Republic of Cuba.
In addition to the many doctors and medical personnel trained via her largesse, we commend the Cuban medical system for its Eye-Care Programme, which not only brought blessed relief to hundreds of our citizens and residents, but was a hallmark of the United Progressive Party Administration under the Hon. Baldwin Spencer.
The UPP also recognizes and is grateful for the education and training of hundreds of our students in various disciplines – which, on their own, the average family could never have afforded. Accordingly, Cuba has directly lifted many graduates and their families out of poverty and into a brighter future.
Further, the UPP acknowledges the genuine love, respect, and affection that Cuban officials have shown to Brother Spencer and other Party representatives – in and out of office – during our long and happy relationship.
It is unfortunate that the mutually beneficial partnership our two countries forged has been ended so abruptly by the sitting Administration; but we assure the Government and People of Cuba that the United Progressive Party is neither ungrateful nor forgetful.
Out of your little you gave much – without taking – and we will continue to carry you in our hearts and in our prayers.

“…has been ended so abruptly by the sitting Administration…”
WHAT ARE YOU REFERRING TO? WHERE IS THE ARTICLE FROM THE GOVERNMENT STATING THAT IT HAS ENDED ITS “PARTNERSHIP” WITH CUBA??
Wat a slap in Cuba face
You all in the UPP are nothing but a set of loosers. You all know very well the underlying circumstances but you all hypocritical self trying to portray differently bout “It is unfortunate that the mutually beneficial partnership our two countries forged has been ended so abruptly by the sitting Administration.” Would you have any other choice had your jokey party being in government?
Bunch of DESPERATE HYPOCRITES indeed with a DUNCE little black boy controlled by the Lipstick Hag
UPP’s statement is testimony to the fact that they dont love Antigua. It is all about a hidden political agenda. Keep them away for the next 50 years…till I am old and Grey!!!
From my understanding, they’re been replaced by a medical team from Africa. Our administration has bowed to Trump by letting go the Cubans, yet still we are banned from entering the US.
These idiotic ALP foot-soldiers really don’t understand what is happening. They just have to make an intervention to earn their crumbs. Hope those who are supposed to replace them are truly medical personnel and not trafficked to get to mainland USA. The U.S has not forgotten.
I’m sorry half these half comments don’t really make sense what’s the hidden political agenda of Cuban doctors that help Antigua for decades it’s very open that it’s from the UPP prospective with a big of bragging like saying it started under UPP.
But Antigua Antigua ending medical with Cuba it’s had to not see it from pressure from US to be an obviously step to completely put a blockage on Cuba last and biggest source of income to progress their Monroe doctrine since the see the western hemisphere are America and theirs to control like what is happening in Venezuela they saying they want their oil and land back
GB said he is a friend to all enemy of know. So why is he turning his back on such a trusted friend?
GB we can survive and live meaningful lives without the US.
Little is also much.. We can find a way. It is sinful to forsake such a friend as Cuba. Spiritually this will not end well.
My Dear UPP, if feel your hurt.
I feel the pain of every Antiguan who has benefitted from Cuba’s generosity and professionalism.
I ask this question.
Are we really independent?
The only island dependence that antigua experiences is for the Prime Miniater to curse and denegrade citizens and nationals with impunity.
Oh sure!! We experience that sort and the highest level of independence.
However standing in our best interest is certain not part of our independence.
The decision to end relations with the Cuban Government was not a decision of the Antiguan government.
I can say so emphatically.
It was INSTRUCTIONS ha ded down to the government of Antigua by the United States of America.
Our guvernment was not given a choice.
It was simply do as I say.
The big and bad policy of the prime minister, “friends of all and enemy of none” could not stand.
Our sovereignty was immediately washed away.
We didn’t sit and assess the repercussions of our actions.
Let us consider some of the ripple effects of such an action.
For years Cuba has welcomed thousands of caribbean students into its universities for the best education in the world.
Cuba’s medical professionals are second to none. Our people have benefitted from free education in any and all possible sectors.
What becomes of that benevolence as of now that we have become a bullied people?
What happens to the hundreds of Antiguan students who are enrolled in Cuban universities?
Is America opening its doors to those students so they can continue theor studies and making educational opportunities available to new students under the same terms as was available in Cuba?
I am sure that Gaston Browne a d Roosevelt SkerRAT are dreading the day that their countries became independent and the njnber of times that they have preached sovereignty.
What is the caribbean benefiting from its relationship with America?
We enjoy one way trade with America. We import all of needs from America.
All that we desire can be obtained from Canada, Africa and Europe.
We have forced ourselves in a corner with our trading patterns wirh America.
Our nationals in America are there on their own accord.
They want to live champagne lives on mauby pockets so they are in America developing it.
They work hard for theor dollars.
Migration will NEVER cease.
If America decides to repatriate EVERY non national they will find somewhere else to migrate to and settle and develop.
America’s greatness is on the back of migrants.
So when our leaders bow to America because their national are there working hard i call them jelly fish.
There is one good thing coming out of that.
America is subconsciously opening the doors to the mother land. We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters from Africa.
Travel between Ghana and other African countries and Antigua and the Caribbean will become easier.
Soon we will have more people interested in returning to the mother land rather than dying for the fast life of smoke and mirrors in America.
Our government continues to fail us.
Double Sir diplomacy is obsolete.
New guards are needed.
Antigua needs to redeem itself.
Gaston and his spineless cabiNOT have overstayed theor welcome.
They need to go.
WHAT!!! I cannot believe what I’m reading.
Cuba has not only been supplying doctors and nurses to Antigua & Barbuda, but also medical supplies as well.
Why has this happened all of a sudden?
The country can ill afford this move with our current lack of qualified medical practitioners, and those who are qualified tend to move on for better wages and better accommodation.
I for one hope that the recent kerfuffle and discord in regards to the USA’s Antigua’s controversial Citizens By Investment (CBI) programme that saw Trump place travel restrictions on Antiguans.
If this turns out to be the case of this ABLP administration putting travel before our health, then Gaston Browne has to resign forthwith, an immediate General Election called through a lack of confidence in their governance.
I sincerely hope I’m wrong…
@Straight Shooter Wel..You are to ignorant about Cuba Educational Systems and downgrading the others Educational programs world wide including the one that Antigua have in place.
I’m Cuban and my kids are studying here in Antigua..By far but by far the Content of the Subjects that Antigua have in place is better than Cuba. If you never study in Cuba primary and secondary school then you can’t be so affirmative that Cuba have “the best Educational system” there is brilliants people around the world in science, engineering, doctors, lawyers, etc, and none of them where graduated in Cuba. Please you just write an ignorant statements about what Cuba is in reality. Please don’t do it..I’m Cuban.
HMMMMM have we discontinued our relationship with Cuba?
UPP praising Cuba now, but what about when they were in power?
I believe that decision was taken long before that visa issue. I dont think its political. Pringle not everything has to be about politics
UPP is right to acknowledge Cuba’s help, but the government also has to make decisions based on current realities. Both things can be true.
This sounds more like political positioning than genuine appreciation. Actions speak louder than press releases.
APS, show the people of Antigua the real images of the Cuban healthcare system. Let them see the state of the hospitals and pharmacies. There are no doctors to care for the Cuban people because a large number of them are in other countries looking for extra money to improve their lives. It’s not because Cuba is so generous. The Cuban government keeps 50-70% of each doctor’s salary. And the doctor saves the rest to send to their family in Cuba. And it’s all a facade, because all Cuban doctors and professionals need the money and it’s in their best interest to remain silent, because otherwise they’ll be sent back to Cuba and never leave again. To give you an idea, at the current exchange rate of USD to Cuban pesos, professionals in Cuba are earning around 20 USD per month.
Thank you for shedding light on the reality faced by Cuban doctors. This is a supposed act of generosity from a single-party (communist) dictatorship that has been in power for over 66 years.
These doctors are forced to sign contracts of modern -day exploitation as the only way to survive the daily hardships imposed by the government.
Why didn’t act like Bahamas ?. That country terminated the contract and stipulated that the doctors would receive 10 % of their salary.
…..woukd receive 100 % of their salary.
