UPP Drops Wayne Marsh as St Paul Candidate Over Citizenship Requirement

United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Jamale Pringle has confirmed that Wayne Benjamin Marsh will not contest the St. Paul constituency for the party in the upcoming general elections, according to Antigua.news.

The UPP is expected to name a replacement candidate shortly.

Marsh, an attorney who had been serving as the party’s caretaker in St. Paul, is reportedly unwilling to renounce his United States citizenship — a constitutional requirement for eligibility to serve in Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda.

He had spent several years building support in the constituency and was widely seen as the UPP’s main challenger to incumbent MP E.P. Chet Greene of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

The Constitution bars individuals who have pledged allegiance to a foreign state from serving in Parliament unless that allegiance is formally renounced.

  1. The ONE AND ONLY DULY ELECTED LEADER OF THE UPP is the HON LARS JAMALE PRINGLE.

Do not be distracted by fake news about his resignation. He is the ONE. He is the man of the moment. His leadership is VALID. All other wannabes and empty vessels need to win at convention, not merely wish to be the leader. So once again for the record:

The ONE AND ONLY DULY ELECTED LEADER OF THE UPP is the HON. LARS JAMALE PRINGLE.

  2. This ain’t even funny now. I would usually laugh and full my comments with laughing emoji but this is just sad and pathetic on all ends. Another failure under Jamal Pringle leadershit. And also didn’t Wayne B. Marsh as a trained lawyer knew that its in the constitution of Antigua and Barbuda you have to renounce your dual citizenship to sit in parliament as your oath of alligence is to the state of ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA. This is why nobody takes UPP serious except for the 5 old farts who continue to comment on ANR. Them full of SHIT💩💩💩💩💩💩!!!

  3. @RED TILL ME DEAD – More than full a shit. This is distasteful now. You just cannot make up this kind a story. So a last minute now fu go fin’ smaddy fu run pan dis ticket. Sigh! @Brix – Let me hear your take on this.

  4. Why Wayne did that to UPP at the 11th hour if he knew he wasn’t going to surrender his US citizenship? Made the party waste time and money investing political capital into him, just to turn his back on the party when they need him.

  5. I never even heard of this man so I will guess he wasn’t impactful as a “caretaker” and I’m sure Chet would blaze his ass so it’s best he holds on to his citizenship.

  6. Why Wehner didn’t talk bout that? Yes I’m on his case cause he attacking Baltimore but not Wayne and his people. Get out man

  7. Yet US Citizens like Lester Bird born to an Antiguan father could become PM.
This is one reason why Antiguans & Barbudans in the Diaspora are reluctant to return to the nation to make any significant changes through their experiences.

  8. @ LESTER WAS NOT AN ANTIGUAN BY BIRTH

That is correct, but he did renounce his birth place and citizenship. While the constitution does not make provision for someone of non-Antiguan birth, it does demand that you renounce any foreign citizenship before you can run for office.

  9. Is he born Antiguan and gained US citizenship or was be born a US citizen?

If we was born Antiguan and refuses to renounce his US citizenship then that speaks volumes to the electorate.

Can this be clarified for the readers?

  10. Hey anyone knows if they found the bullet from his failed assassination? Smh
I thought you had to be famous to be considered. Still laughing 🤣😂🤣😂

  11. That insidious law needs to change. You as a born national of Antigua and Barbuda.Cannot run for political office if you are a dual citizen. However, one born outside of Antigua and Barbuda. Can run for any political office in Antigua and Barbuda once naturalized. If Marsh knew that law would be relevant into the process. Why he did not back away long time ago?I never heard him or anyone say he holds dual citizenships.

  12. Just wondering how many more persons on either side have dual citizenship. Would be interesting to know. The constitution strictly forbids anyone with foreign citizenship (other than Antigua and Barbuda) from running for Parliament.

  13. The PS said someone is signing her name on documents… let’s talk About that … btw have they recovered all of the stolen vehicles yet ? Are you guys driving on better roads ? I’m Paying more for my old Jeep to DRIVE ON these bumpy roads …btw I wouldn’t give up my citizenship yet .. because we are in great doo doo💩, gas them head up with ton of lies … gas-ton .. even Steven wonder could see this is bullish … vote for BETTER ROADS A BETTER HOSPITAL AFFORDABLE FOOD .. VOTE FOR THE COUNTRY NOT JUST YOURSELF… gimme gimme the the anthem for the freeloaders….

  14. I don’t understand what all this hoopla is about. If Wayne Marsh is a born Antiguan 🇦🇬 Barbudan, and have never renounced his Antiguan 🇦🇬 Barbudan citizenship; there can be no problem with him pledging allegiance to another sovereignty as a conflict of interest. The pledged allegiance to the USA, is just a convenient conveyance to facilitate the oath of allegiance: which does not require renouncement of any citizenship, unless that country is of a declared Communist Ideology. In Wayne’s case. It is like pledging allegiance to the country that gave you birth, and the country which gives you bread. It is one-and but the same allegiance. I could find merrit with the contention, if the allegiance was required to become the head of state of any of the pledged allegiances. Such as the Office of The Prime Minister. So then, what is to be the benefit of having England’s King: as the head of Our State? Has he pledged allegiance to Antigua 🇦🇬 Barbuda, and renounced England’s citizenship? Thus staid. The British Colonial shackles must be abolish, if we are desierous of true autonomous sovereignty; and not this subjugated status of Commonwealth mantra association. Thus, I posit, that the pending election be postponed, and a referendum be table, and embark upon for Antiguans 🇦🇬 Barbudans status to be established as a Republic; and relinquish the trappings of Old England’s Monachy disparity. Before any election is call within the remaining allotted time, of the current incumbent political entity.

  15. Wilmoth Daniel told Baldwin that someone in Baldwin Cabinet tried to BRIBE him. Mercy who could it be? That person still active in politics? Hmmmmmm

  16. The Constiution says you should not have sworn allegiance to another flag. If you were born overseas to Antiguan parents, as a baby or new born, you did not swear an allegiance. That is why birth does not matter if you are a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda as no oath of allegiance to another country was made. As was the case with Lester Bird and Reuben Harris.

  17. @Otto

Thank you for explaining the obvious for people like “LESTER WAS NOT AN ANTIGUAN BY BIRTH” cause dem knock dem head on the UPP Can’t Park at East Bus STation

  18. @ THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN

The law doesn’t need to be changed. It’s plain and simple. You must be a citizen of only one country (Antigua) if you plan on running for Antiguan public office.

  19. Isn’t it nice to witness the ABLP supporters out in force when there are any perceived issues within the membership of the UPP.

The things that discombobulate you all tickle me bad. Here’s why: 😉

    1) With much instability around the globe today, doesn’t it make sense to have other links – or dual citizenship -to other countries? Ask Dr. Dave Ray. Didn’t Gassston make him our Diaspora ambassador? And he also live in America!

    2) If Jamal Pringle hadn’t reacted as such, the responses and criticisms would have been immeasurable. Come on now be honest!

    4) UPP’S open and frank opposition in governance proves that despite the ABLP NAYSAYERS, they do not hide from scrutiny – can you guys say the same of Gaston Browne’s tenure?

    5) If many of you hypocrites were as educated and had two BRILLIANT career changing options wouldn’t you also weigh up your options as well?

    6) Acting swiftly and urgently shows that the Most Honourable Jamal Pringle leadership skills are there for all to see, and shirking his responsibilities isn’t on the cards. That’s why he leads the opposition at present. Top management skills.

    7) Wayne Marsh has I’m sure, will accept the top ranking decision and go on to do well as a top-level attorney. Life throws us all types of obstacles as well as gilt-edged opportunities – it’s how we deal with them when they arise that counts.

    8) Now the next UPP candidate has a great opportunity to prove his or her worth to the party.

    9) I purposely haven’t gone down the usual line of highlighting Gaston Browne’s obvious shortcomings, not only because there’s too many to mention, but it bores me to tears just repeating his damn weaknesses.

    10) Again, I applaud Jamal Pringle’s swift action, and you can bet your last dollar that whatever the future holds for Wayne Marsh, he’ll be doing a lot better than the many ABLP complainants on these ANR threads.

Never forget, that Brixtonian deals with any issues that arises in the political arena. Facts!

    See it dey @FC … I NEVER HIDE 👍🏾

  20. what has changed is the terrorists within the UPP such as Gisele, Pringle, Wehner and others. Once you were a supporter of Richard Lewis, after the Convention there were no efforts to mend fences. You were despised and hated. That was the downfall of the UPP. They must learn to embrace differences and work together. They lacked that ability hence the situation they are in now.

  21. @Plain and Simple: In my opinion, certain positions in Government should be held by Nationals. You could have someone not born in Antigua and Barbuda,be the next Prime Minister.I am fully aware Lester Bird was not born in Antigua.I am a National of Antigua and Barbuda.I made a choice to leave Antigua.I also made a choice to become a naturalized citizen of the country where I am living.Because of that I cannot run for public office in my birth country. However, the politicians would accept voters coming down to vote.I have never come into Antigua and vote in any elections.I would never do that.I Voted where I am living,at election times.

  22. Stay where you are and submit to the racist regime. You are as weak as they come. Not living in Antiua but trying to tell Antigua to change its law.

Why don’t you tell your President to do what you demand

  23. What’s happening here is affecting the UPP but what this treacherous Syndicate called the Antigua Labour Party, lead by a Lawless, despicable Bully is doing, is affecting nationals and non-nationals alike. Imagine all the thefts against the state that have been attributed to him; from illegal land swapping, illegal boat deals, to Odebretch’s € 3.5 mil. bribery. We even had a claimed forged signature for EC 5 mil. and all this was shut down by the Dictator; absolutely no intervention by the police. These issues are plaguing the country but Wayne Marsh and UPP are at center stage. It’s about time we disbanded the police force because we have an investigator, a lawyer, Jury and a Judge all in one. Who needs the police?

  24. @hypocrisy, are you talking about Wayne Marsh or Dave Ray?

Because both ah dem live In America and have influence right here in Tigua (even though somewhat questionable in Dave Ray’s case) 🇦🇬

I’m just asking for a friend sup! 🤣🤣🤣

  25. The funny and laughable thing which Antiguans are missing while they stress and beat the dual citizenship issue to death as to whether or not they can sit in the parliament, just drive the length and breath of Antigua and I am sure that you’ll realize that you don’t even control a majority of the profitable businesses in Antigua. The hotels, the ports, the mariners, the major food distribution companies, the agriculture is crappy as the supermarkets import inferior products and sell to you at outlandish prices, your roads been built are by a foreign contractor who is giving you all roads that have you feel like you’re on a roller coaster, the Santo Dominicans, the Jamaicans, the Guyanese, the Serians are using you all like their door mats, yet you lap your tails between your asses and grin lakka dead roast dawg. Wake to f*^k up and stop worrying about Antiguans who born dey an Antigua and want to help grow Antigua positively.
Ebry bady else a rab, R U doortish rass blind. Ah dat R U fu a study.
