UPP Chairperson Gisele Isaac Responds to Dr. Edmond Mansoor’s Departure

United Progressive Party (UPP) Chairperson D. Gisele Isaac has shared her views on the resignation of Dr. Edmond Mansoor, a notable figure within the party, during an interview on Twin Island Media.

Speaking with host Darren Matthew Ward, Isaac responded to questions about Mansoor’s decision to leave the UPP and the potential impact of his departure on the party’s strategy.

Isaac made it clear that Mansoor’s resignation did not come as a shock.

“His departure did not come as a surprise to me. He essentially disengaged after the UPP convention in April, even though he hadn’t officially resigned until now,” she explained. Despite his withdrawal, she said there had been no prior indications of dissatisfaction. “As far as I knew, he was happy up until the convention. If he had concerns, he never communicated them to me personally.”

In response to questions about how Mansoor’s departure might affect the UPP, especially given his role in party strategy, Isaac remained confident in the party’s ability to move forward. “I don’t believe anyone is irreplaceable,” she stated. “We’ve had new, talented individuals join the party since January of last year, and I’m confident that others will step in to handle the tasks he used to manage.”

Isaac emphasized that Mansoor had ample opportunities to raise concerns with the party leadership, highlighting their longstanding friendship that predates their involvement with the UPP.

“If he wanted to communicate dissatisfaction, he had access to do so, both personally and through the party’s channels, but he chose not to.”

When pressed about Mansoor’s criticism of the UPP’s failure to reposition itself after the 2023 general election, Isaac firmly rejected the accusation.

“I don’t understand what he means by that,” she remarked. “Repositioning the party isn’t solely the responsibility of the political leader or the chair. It’s a collective effort, and Mansoor himself was a key member of our executive, which is why this accusation doesn’t make sense to me.”

Isaac also pointed out that the party has remained active and engaged since the election, citing various initiatives and actions, including the People’s Parliament and their legal challenges related to the 2023 election results. “We’ve been very busy, raising issues and bringing matters to the public’s attention,” she said, questioning the grounds of Mansoor’s critique.

Addressing a broader question about the Labour Party’s perceived strategy of attracting former UPP members, Isaac dismissed the notion that the UPP could prevent individuals from leaving for personal reasons. “If people don’t have principles or integrity, there’s nothing the party can do. We’ve seen individuals like Anthony Smith and Mansoor, who have been vocally critical of the Labour Party in the past, now choosing to join them. It’s a matter of personal choice, not a failing on the UPP’s part.”

Isaac said party remains strong, despite the departure of key figures.

“There are thousands of loyal supporters who have stayed with us, rain or shine. The UPP is built on principles and integrity, and we will continue to move forward with those who share our vision for a better Antigua and Barbuda.”

  4. I think with all what is going on in Antigua ,poor infrastructure, high cost of living ,unsolve murders, missing people, nepotism and corruption ,UPP seems to be attracting all the attention.

  5. The chairman walked out in the middle of the Retreat. She later wrote a half-ass apology saying she is going through some things and she is taking a break and even stated when she will be coming back.

A committee was set up to look into her unprofessional behavior. The three members (all top people) declared that she was sorry and that was that. Not one word of her walk out was noted in the minutes.
UPP will eventually become POWA, Part 2.
