UPP Candidate for St. Mary’s South Calls on Minister of Works to Fast Track Repairs on Cades Bay Bridge

The Minister of Works, Hon. Maria Browne has come in for harsh criticism, as yet another vehicle has veered off the roadway near the construction site at Cades Bay Bridge, landing in a 9-foot ravine.

The accident occurred last Sunday, during heightened traffic conditions, because of the Seafood Festival in Urlings.

UPP Candidate for St. Mary’s South, Kelvin “Shugy” Simon first raised the alarm about the hazardous conditions at the Cades Bay Bridge, in Parliament earlier this year.

He warned that poor road conditions could lead to significant safety issues and serious accidents.

A few weeks thereafter, a vehicle ran off the roadway and into the ravine.

A makeshift traffic bypass has been constructed, but little progress has been made to rebuild the bridge, jeopardizing the safety of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The construction of the Cades Bay Bridge began in November 2019, yet a projected date of completion has not been announced.

Simon believes that the Cades Bay Bridge must be modernized to withstand the effects of climate change and he is calling for several issues to be addressed immediately.

These include the eroding roadway with a sharp drop-off, the lack of signage warning of the hazards, the overgrowth and obstructions blocking the view of the roadway as well as poor lighting.

“The community has been crying out for the government to address this safety issue and their calls have been disregarded.

Work has been proceeding at a snail’s pace and since the general elections, construction has come to a virtual halt.

This is a very hazardous work zone and motorists must navigate the area with caution.

ABLP has failed to invest in our country’s infrastructure, and they have been unduly careless in maintaining a safe work zone at Cades Bay,” Simon said.

With the staging of the Piango Fest at Cades Bay this weekend, Simon is calling for safety barriers and other measures be put in place immediately.

The status of the driver, passengers and the severity of their injuries, in Sunday’s accident remain unclear.

  1. APOSTLE SHUGY SIMON of the NAZARENE CHURCH oh please. Tap run from God like Jonah. Politics is not for you. You like to fete and wine up and show off you chicken legs. You ILLEGALLY NOMINATED, then RESIGN now u a try beg back fu de job u resign from. A wan real PAPPYSHOW and 🤡 🤡 🤡 you be punk!

  2. I would believe that the construction of that bridge is being looked at but the engineering aspect is not just a simple one to put in place. Modern infrastructure is necessary to incorporate climate change as mentioned and also in depth study of the soil erosion in that area is necessary. Patience is virtue but the government must communicate to the public mire so the residents of that area so they won’t be frustrated as it seems nothing is being done.

GOVT please give a report as to where this project is at the moment

    Thank you

  3. It’s very unfortunate that another vehicle ended up in the ditch and indeed Honourable Browne and her team must now prioritise the construction of a guardrail. Drivers also need to be more careful on the roadways to avoid catastrophe.

  4. COVERING FOR THEM WILL NOT HELP, PEOPLE ARE GETTING HURT.
WHO KNOWS, YOU ,YOUR CHILDREN OR A FAMILY MEMBER CAN BE NEXT AND NO ONE WILL BE THERE TO CRY FOR YOU.

  5. Engineering aspect is not a simple thing? In this day and age building a simple concrete bridge in Antigua must similar to the undersea tunnelling of the Eurotunnel from Dover in England to Calais in France. Give us a break.

  6. Is high time for them to fix this bridge. Is over 3 years now. Somebody have to die before they take this thing serious. Do better!
