PM Browne Questions UPP’s Use of Campaign Funds Amid Boat Purchase Allegations

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for greater financial transparency from the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP), alleging that campaign funds may have been used for personal purchases, including a boat.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne claimed he had received information suggesting that some UPP figures had misused political donations. He challenged the opposition to disclose how funds were allocated, arguing that contributors had a right to know whether their money was being used for legitimate political purposes.

“I was told that campaign funds were used to buy a boat. If that is not the case, then let them come forward and clear the air,” Browne said.

Kelvin “Shuggy” Simon, the UPP MP for St Mary’s South, dismissed the claim when asked in an interview, saying any money he received was personal. However, Browne suggested that opposition members should be more transparent about their finances, accusing them of mismanaging resources while claiming to lack funds for political activities.

The UPP has yet to issue an official response. However, party insiders have dismissed Browne’s comments as an attempt to divert attention from national concerns.

The allegations have sparked renewed debate about financial accountability in Antigua and Barbuda’s political parties. Observers suggest the controversy could lead to calls for stronger regulations on campaign financing and disclosure.

  1. I believe the law presently speaks to disclosure of monies given to a political party (or person) within a specific time period (I stand to be corrected).

I would suggest that the government go to Parliament with haste and amend the law to say that ALL POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS, WHETHER TO A POLITICAL PARTY OR CANDIDATE, SHOULD BE DISCLOSED TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION COVERING THE PERIOD 1ST JANUARY TO 31ST DECEMBER YEARLY.

Let us see if the government is really serious about financial transparency or if it is just talk and political pandering.

  2. APOSTLE SHUGY SIMON OF THE NAZARENE CHURCH did not deny the allegation when speaking on miss Knight show. He tried to laugh it off

  3. The allegations about UPP campaign funds being used for personal purchases, including a boat, are troubling and could seriously damage public confidence in the party’s leadership. Campaign funds should be used solely for their intended purpose—serving the electorate. While it’s crucial to ensure a fair investigation, the incident highlights a need for stricter regulations on political spending. If the claims are true, it’s time for political leaders to be held to a higher standard of accountability.

  4. It’s important to give the accused parties a fair chance to explain and clarify the situation. Transparency and accountability are essential for a healthy democracy, and this issue could prompt greater scrutiny of political funding practices moving forward.

  5. These innuendos and accusations does not serve our country’s best interest. There should be guardrails in the form of laws and regulations in place to ensure adherence and transparency.

  6. Have you people ever considered these allegations are just to cast a bad light on UPP and it’s just a part of ALP early campaign tactics for a snap election, Gaston knows people are gullible and will swallow any sh*t

  7. Not Gaston brown talking about misusing money when he have millions of land homes grocery store etc. he misused money more than any body from Antigua
