UPP calls for investigation into Freeland robbery

The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) wants a full investigation into monies that were allegedly stolen from ABLP Senator Michael Freeland.

The Party’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Damani Tabor, explained the UPP’s position and noted that “These are public funds and we call upon the government to have this fully investigated and the public apprised as to what really went down.”

Tabor said he just doesn’t buy the explanation given in parliament by Leader of Government Business, Lennox Weston.

“Either the prime minister lied when he said it was a scandal, or Weston’s lying when he said it’s just a regular robbery,” Tabor said.

According to him, “One of them is lying and that fact alone must trigger a full investigation and then out of that would come recommendation of improvements to safeguard public funds.”

“Why were these public funds not guarded, why weren’t proper procedures in place and who can even believe that at an auction everything is cash and there are no cheques,” Tabor questioned.

In parliament on Monday November, 27th, 2017, Weston said that over $155,000 from an auction conducted by senator Michael Freeland was stolen and that the matter had been reported to the police.

But subsequent to Weston’s pronouncement, the leader of the ABLP, Gaston Browne announced that Freeland’s name would be removed from the list of potential ABLP candidates in St John’s Rural East constituency because of a “serious issue”.

  1. Agreed. I believe the police will/should do the investigation since Mr. Freeland apparently filed a report with them. Full 100% transparency in this issue is what is needed.
