UPP Boosts Campaign Efforts Ahead of St. Mary’s South By-Election Date, Seeks Clarity from ABEC

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is intensifying its campaign efforts in the St. Mary’s South constituency as it awaits the upcoming by-election.

The resignation of former MP Kelvin “Shugy” Simon on June 7 has triggered the need for a by-election, which must be conducted within the next 83 days, as stipulated by the Constitution.

To capitalize on this opportunity, the UPP Chairman, D. Gisele Isaac, has announced that the party will continue its campaign activities in the constituency.

This Saturday, July 15, marks the second round of the “Small Business Pull-up” event, taking place in Bolans. Additionally, Isaac mentions that several other events are scheduled in the lead-up to the by-election.

Rumors had circulated that the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), the governing body responsible for conducting elections, was excluding weekends and public holidays from the 120-day count.

However, ABEC officials have refuted these claims, stating that the count includes all days, including weekends and public holidays.

Isaac expresses concern over reports from sources within ABEC, suggesting that the Commission aims to extend the election timeline into November.

This potential delay poses a problem for the UPP.

Consequently, Isaac asserts that the party will formally request written confirmation from ABEC, seeking assurance that the constitutional timeframe will be strictly adhered to.

This measure aims to avoid any further confusion or ambiguity surrounding the by-election.

  1. During the general election ABLP was their own downfall. They shot themselves in the foot causing UPP to now have a lot mouth now…. The candidates that UPP has presented & is still presenting should have no place in our parliament. They are all shallow & daft and bring nothing of substance to our national development. This time around the Labourites has learnt their mistake

    • However @ Bluddy Bloke, according to all you MYOPIC ABLP supporters, 40 years of Birdism and Browneism economic manifestos/policies hasn’t had any detrimental effect on the country to-date.

You Gastonites cease to amaze – don’t you want to see Antigua & Barbuda finally make some sort of progress?

Why hasn’t 40 years of ABLP INACTION made you all see the light?

      What a mystery …

      • @ BRIXTONIAN…Progress with the UPP Losers ?? I would hate to have BRIXTONIAN supporting me. He knows how to pick LOSERS such as UPP.

GASTON BROWNE best Prime Minister in the WORLD.

We shall have 10 seats in Parliament within the next few weeks.
BRIXTONIAN and ANALYST should bury Their face in the sand. Both should find a job.

    • @ Bluddy Joke

Why don’t you therefore go and remove them? You do realise that it is THE ELECTORATE WHICH VOTED FOR THEM and that they did not STEAL THEMSELVES INTO PARLIAMENT LIKE SOME OF THE PRIME MINISTERS COLLEAGUES who are in there only because he transferred voters to their constituencies to make them win.
YOU ARE A WASTE- BIG FAT JOKER.

    • I can’t identify anyone in our communities who is as despicable and nasty as the Prime Minister and he’s as natural as they come. The ALP is so degraded that it has opened its doors to rejected, dishonest, UPP cheats who are challenging the lazy incompetent Labourites for their positions. Antigua is being controlled by a lawless gang of amateurs. Are you pleased with Patrice Luke going forward to representing you?

  2. We lost a great Antiguan sportsman, no mention is made of him – condolences to the family of Ralston Otto. He represented Antigua, leeward Islands , president Eleven, West Indian A team. He was robbed of his place in West Indies senior team after scoring the most runs in the regional tournament. RIP my brother.

  3. The 120 days stipulation is a provision in the Constitution and ought to be adhered to. Any attempt to delay that process and to extend the time frame would be unconstitutional. We really need to let the people of St. Mary’s South go to the poll and get this bi-election over and done with. We run the risk of setting a bad precedence that might become a norm in the future if the constitutional date and time frame is not adhered to. Government must be seen to be a government who respects and honour the Constitution.

    • We now talking about bad precedence….with so much ambiguity in the law and the constitution what do you expect….
This is why the whole confusion of qualify to be elected…nomination misleading procedures etc…now asking ABEC to adhere by a law that gives the PM the power to announce the date of election.
With all this confusion…..constitution reform is really paramount….now more than ever.
So Audley we have already set the precedence that the nomination process is useless…Go- Green or any independent candidate should given a chance to participate in our national election with nomination.
Now any parliamentarian can now resign without rhyme or reason and trigger a BI-ELECTION….as he or she feels like…that’s a precedence.
What a tangled web we weave!
