UPP blunts Pointe Xpress’ attack on Dr Baldwin Spencer and his Administration
The Leadership and Executive of the United Progressive Party (UPP) views with contempt the efforts of Pointe Xpress, in its April 3 edition, to disparage the tenure and accomplishments of the Hon. Dr. Baldwin Spencer during the 10 years he led the Government of Antigua and Barbuda.
We will not repeat the untruthful, ungracious, and patently envious statements here. However, we will continue to celebrate and – we daresay, boast – in his words: “Never has so much been accomplished for so many in so short a time in Antigua and Barbuda.”
The achievements of Dr. Spencer and the UPP cannot be erased or discredited simply by the shameless writer’s say-so. They stand not only as monuments to our “People First” vision, but as yardsticks by which the current Administration continues to be measured and found woefully short.
Our social safety nets brought security and dignity to the vulnerable – the poor, the elderly, school children, and, especially, single mothers – through the School Meals Programme and the School Uniform Grant, as well as the PDV-CAB Utility Subsidy and the People’s Benefit Card.
Our talented and ambitious youth were the beneficiaries of the truly global Prime Minister’s Scholarships and the National Student Loan Fund the UPP established,
The landscape bears testimony to the State-owned structures the UPP Administration built, began, or completed – such as the new terminal of the V.C. Bird International, the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, the National Parliament Building, the present campus of The UWI-FI, the National Public Library, and the now-Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.
Under the Spencer Administration, the commercial transformation of the Friars Hill Road – “The Golden Mile” – took place. New hotels were built, others expanded, and tourism and the private sector grew, while public-sector employment was carefully controlled, and LIAT was kept flying.
All this and much, much more – even as the Government was weathering the Global Economic Crisis that rocked our tourism source markets and decimated our industry; the crash of the Stanford Empire, which had employed hundreds of residents in well paid jobs; and the fall of British American and CLICO, which took millions of our people’s savings. And yet, not one government worker was sent home.
The United Progressive Party also worked assiduously to restore this Nation’s image in the eyes of the international community. We transformed Antigua and Barbuda from being described as “the most corrupt developing country in the world” to one known for respectability and trustworthiness.
Dr. Spencer and his Administration’s legacy cannot be tarnished by petty jealousy. Nor can the current Administration’s reputation be made even marginally better by the writer’s pitiful and puerile attempts to belittle ours.
Well done, Hon. Baldwin Spencer and the United Progressive Party Administration. We are proud of you!

Dr Baldwin Spencer has put country first. Born and bred Antiguans did not feel swamped by non nationals as they do today. Compare the crime rate under his administration to that of today. His achivements as shown are commendable with no crappy sound bite about ‘ Economic Powerhouse’. Negatives as listed are true, no deflection but compared to the positves they pale into insignificance. The current Prime Minister has, so far, nothing to show, except perhaps mastery in nepotism and cronyism and self enrichment (you know what I mean). The rating of the top ten
Caribbean leaders should give you a clue. Gaston Browne 9th of 10 is embarrassing and rightly so. ‘ never forget’, it would not surprise me to know either you or members of your family have benefitted from Dr Spencer’s policies. Think about it.

Hon V.C Bird is the best prime Minister which governs with compassion and look to develop the people of this country, Hon Baldwin Spencer was cut from that same cloth of compassion is concerned with social program.
