President of the Antigua and Barbuda Free Trade Union (ABFTU) Samuel James is calling on the Labour Department to investigate a situation at the University of Health Sciences Antigua.

Antigua Newsroom reported yesterday that staff has not been paid for several months. The medical school also owes students and statutory corporations, a source revealed.

The union leader called on the department to “go and investigate and where necessary protect the interest of the workers at the institution.”

James is also calling on the 45 workers to get representation on the issue.

Labour Commissioner Eltonia Anthony-Rojas is quoted as saying that the staff can write to her office for assistance.

“It just has to be from the employees, a letter signed by the interested parties indicating what the problem is and asking for the Department’s assistance,” she said.

The UHSA has not responded to our requests for a comment.

  1. List of entities owed money by UHSA:
    -faculty
    -staff
    -students
    -Medical Benefits
    -Social Security

    Is that correct?

      • wow! Can the university file for bankruptcy? Owing that many entities is NOT a good sign. Poor employees. Hope that they will write to the Labour Department for intervention.
