Deputy General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union Chester Hughes has warned of difficult days ahead for people in this country as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on.

Hughes is calling on people to be prepared for the long haul, and to change their lifestyles to match the difficult economic times.

“I just want to say to every worker out there in society that now is the time for you to live as family. Now is not the time for you to live as individuals. Households must now start to plan life and a budget around the minimum income that is being received instead of everybody still living independent lives,” Hughes said.

“This pandemic is not going to end [right now]. All indicators are saying that we have at least another year in this crisis. And if we don’t plan properly a lot of persons are going to be bankrupt by the end of the year — bankrupt to the point where there’ll be stress, anxiety attacks and even psychological issues.

“People are going to lose some of their assets. They’ve got to be prepared to do what they have to do to survive and to make sure that their assets are maintained because if they continue to live the life they are living, they are going to lose some of their most valuable and prized possessions,” Hughes added.

  2. Today is the 11th day of August,2020.As of today many persons living on Antigua and Barbuda. They are still awaiting their monthly pensions from Social Security. Why are they being paid late every month. This has been going on before Covid-19.I know persons in Antigua.Who do business with ECAB and not one cent from Social Security for August.I would guaranteed that all Members of Parliament are paid on time monthly. They are asking all poor people to tighten their belts. However, they are getting all of their perks monthly.I have not seen or heard anywhere.Any member of Parliament gave up any of their perks and a cut in salary for a month. If they were to do so,perhaps we would have a flood.
