Union Calls Meeting To Discuss New Developments In Jolly Beach Hotel Saga

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union has called an emergency meeting for Friday 4th September at 10am to discuss the way forward for employees given uncertainties with the future of the Jolly Beach Hotel.

It is reported that the Sunwing Travel Group was unable to reach an agreement with Starfish which will be detaching itself from the management of Jolly Beach Resort.

This could see the relationship between Sunwing and Jolly Beach ending within days.

With uncertainty over the management agreement, it is not clear whether the hotel will open in November as planned.

In June, Jolly Beach Hotel staff voted to accept severance after being laid off since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that same month, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that a U.S investor was in talks with the government to invest into upgrades of Jolly Beach. A sale was also being explored.

Jolly Beach,formerly known as Heath’s Bay in Bolans Village.It is a very beautiful beach.However,I cannot say that of the Hotel itself.We have stayed there.We were very unhappy with many things on that Property.Just hoping someone would buy it and refurbish from the inside out.To make it into the potential it could become.A 4 to 5 stars Property in Antigua.

    • Maintenance is one of the biggest problem in Antigua and Barbuda. A lot of the hotels on island are poorly maintained where some of the structures are in poorly condition. Once they have a good ISO Standard Practice preventative maintenance measurement procedures inplace from the beginning of the new structure, it would be easily to control and monitor corrective maintenance costs.

    • Many investors have looked at that property and the only conclusion all came to was that the location was nice but the property was to be demolished in order to start completely from the scratch. The rooms are very narrow, I used to call them Flintstones Rooms. Cannot properly turn around in the showers. Dr. Erhart created a beautiful upscale development next door at Jolly Harbour but when it came to Jolly beach he went cheap to cater for cheap European tourists. All inclusive. The kind of money one needs to put in it to bring it up to standard you may as well go for more upscale market. If housekeeping is on the hall with their cart no one can pass. I always saw Jolly Beach as the beginning of the fall of our tourism plant. It was the first property that catered for cheap tourists. From hereon Antigua lost the edge of being the island for the Rich and Famous only.

  4. Typical case of union leading workers astray and at the same time scaring off investors. In the end the workers will hold an empty bag once again.
    Investors are not beggars they are choosers.
