Authorities are moving to remove unauthorized beach vending operations across Antigua and Barbuda as part of a broader effort to regulate and modernize business activities at major tourism sites.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the directive forms part of the government’s plan to create structured, environmentally friendly vending spaces that align with health and safety standards.
The initiative includes the construction of purpose-built facilities at Little Ffryes Beach, where vendors will be relocated. The new site will feature improved amenities such as proper waste disposal, upgraded utilities, and better access for both residents and visitors.
Merchant said the goal is to ensure order, sanitation, and sustainability along the nation’s popular coastlines while maintaining opportunities for small entrepreneurs.
He confirmed that agencies, including the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), have been instructed to disconnect electricity and water services at unapproved vending sites to support enforcement efforts.
Officials emphasized that the new vending facilities will be provided free of charge, with vendors responsible for maintaining their assigned spaces.

I hope they exercise this same level of tenacity with the people that have put up fences and gates to block beach access.
Order they say is Heaven’s first law, absolutely have no problem with that, the sooner the better
Well politicians can pass laws how much they want to. If the police who has to uphold the law doesn’t act and do their work, then these laws will just remain on the books like many of them before. I mean we have the cellphone law I will call it. Saying you cannot drive and be on your phone. Well you just have to stand at the side of the road and watch the drivers. Almost all of them with the phone on their ear. As if they do not sell earplugs and as if you cannot talk on speaker phone. And I even see police officers doing this. Police Commissioner should first be held to account for the non-upholding of the laws. He needs to explain why his officers are not doing their job. Why at night there are no traffic police checking the many vehicles driving with bad lights or no lights.
A friend of mine his wife a few years ago was in a car accident. The person that hit her was un-insured and un-licensed. When the police came she pointed that out to them. And they told her that is non of her business. The case went to court and up until this day there is no closure. The woman was never charged for driving without insurance and driving an unlicensed vehicle. Only charge was reckless driving. And the case is now still in court for four years. When they further looked into the matter it seems that the driver was family of one of the police officers who were handling the case. That is Antigua Justice for you. It’s who you know.
Will this measure include the vendors who line the entire beach with rental chairs and umbrellas, also placing their rental chairs under all of the trees?

I know exactly the vendor you are talking about. I had a shoutout match with him. I mean he takes up the entire beach and you just cannot find space as a local to go and swim there anymore. This is the lawlessness that our country is coming to when the police doesn’t act.
According to our colonial mind set, only white investors should have the beaches to vend and make monies to send back to their country, the monstrosity that Barrett build on long bay beach is to be celebrated, please go to Nassau Bahamas on bay street where the beach front five minutes walk from the cruise terminal is populated with shops and restaurants and bars, and the government put in the shower and changing room and toilet facility, that’s empowerment of the people my son, here so our people are relegated to pest and hucksters, and to say we paid a loan for these same lands after colonization ended, which shouldn’t be because our ancestors died for this land. The white man got compensated for losing us as slave and v.c bird compensated them for the lands stupidly. And now Gaston gives white monopoly capital concessions to the lands.
When they would have ejected the black locals from the beach , they will then place white people their as this glorified investor savior complex illusion.
