Vendors Defy Vending Ban, Sparking Fairness Row in St. John’s
Vendors have resumed selling fans near the V.C. Bird Bust in defiance of a St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) directive aimed at clearing sidewalks for urban renewal.
Despite being ordered weeks ago to vacate the area, vendors reportedly return after 5 PM when police enforcement wanes. Authorities have intervened multiple times, but the vendors persist, often repacking and returning shortly after being told to leave.
Local vendors who moved into the city market are voicing anger over what they see as selective enforcement. “Is it because of the colour of their skin?” one asked, pointing to perceived bias.
The SJDC has yet to clarify how it plans to enforce its policy uniformly amid rising tensions over fairness and compliance.

“Is it because of the colour of their skin?”
C’mon Gvt is black. Cops are black. Vendors are black. Drivers too.
Maybe it’s time to leave the cotton field and find another form of argument…
Anything left out on the sidewalks or streets for sale, should be confiscated, no exceptions. It isn’t fair to the vendors who followed the law and moved into the market place to have to now deal with a double standard.
This week I was impressed with the new looks around our market. It was clear and smelt good. People will always try and exploit weaknesses. Yes I also agree that in the past the management showed favoritism. It’s a common knowledge that those in charge of the market have been receiving gifts from the squatters. Theses people talk about who they gave money, gifts when the return from Guyana.
Fine them rass and do away with the Trump mentality because no man is above the law. Fine them then lock up them disrespectful rass..
Well they may be need to specify that the order includes fan vendors too. Lol but then again they never left their fans out at nights
You expect anything different. The government in bed with the SYrians. They owe them. They can do what they want. Syrians are taking over every little business and housing in this place. I feel worry for my people. My Broda My Broda my ass. THey will take away everything you have right in front of you. Stay awake ANtiguans. Stay Awake
If them dash dem way just one time I bet not one person boldly defies the police again.
Look at this. Foreigners always have their way
When you are backed up by people in high places
However the government will not stress on this cause they somewaht brings profit to the country. Let it be an Antiguan they would’ve been given tickets like the lady.
Hmm 🤔 🤔 Don’t the policeman have the right to remove him by will or force..so there shouldn’t be no ongoing issue… Smh
They are foreigners. Anything to protect antiguas income
This is the Bull shit I can’t take. This was done already , they run all the indigenous people and left those they protect. They are asking for anarchy. Authority please get this matter clean up. Now,for the benefit of all . They have to move for this is very wrong . Antiguans are endangered species. Fed up 😞
We need to hire Capt Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso for a week to teach Antigua government (Gaston), how to care for his people over foreigners, especially Syrians and Chinese. The Syrians need to obey the vending law set by SJDC… no selling/vending on the street of St Johns city.
They a brazen as hell but we keep patronizing their businesses so we are the ones acclimating their nonesence. If the government says move then move. Our black people can move but your light colour skins can’t? Yes I am racist
It was just a matter of time as I suggested, they just removed the black foreign vendors for the white upper class vendors to show they are more favored, let’s see how this plays out. This administration is spineless, only has passion for local blacks
The police should have locked him up on the spot and take his fans as well . I hope my black people aren’t buying fans from him because even if rain is coming those fans are outside , then you buy them and they stop working smh
The location of a particular Syrian fan vendor, does not only present an issue for cleaning but also a hazard for drivers and is a clear violation of traffic regulations. Fix it please.
See what you have started???? Every rebel without a cause will be only too happy, ignorant as they are., to get political mileage out of this. This practice MUST CEASE AND DESIST immediately. These people run from their war-torn homes and find easy refuge here! 5he colonial government back then, through deliberate acts and policies made them a superior group, largely because of their skin colour and because we the people refuse to accept estate work as our only alternative. These are facts that can be easily ascertained through research. Up to this day, they are being pampered by different political/ government administrations, UPP and ABLP alike and it must stop! Who could forget the UPP’s fawning of “Ambassador” Shoul and the role he played in the scandalous APUA purchase of engines on taxpayers ‘ behalf. Both sides are equally culpable of sucking up to these filthy Arabs. High time to stop the damn nonsense. There is actually one of then who conducts his business under the name of SYRIANO WOODS!!!! The first name based on his ethnicity and origin and the surname which indicates the address from which he conducts his business; selling mainly fans and other household appliances, nestled among the “local” vendors of fruits and vegetables – the WOODS MALL area!!!
– SYRIANO WOODS. Is this even legal? But Antiguans will just continue to grumble and do nothing as they dominate the market for Tyre sales and services, for unhealthy fast foods- fried chicken and chips, “pizzas”) and Shwarma!.Enough is enough! If this group thinks that laws here do not apply to them, send them back to where they belong, The Gaza Strip.
Everytime Antiguians open all you mouth is about foreigners, foreigners, foreigners. Question… IS THERE ANY ANTIGUIANS WHO LIVE IN A FORRIGNE LAND. Please tell us, Antiguians think this island is so special, still them killing and fighting against each other. Look how some a them always ready to crucify They own Prime Minister. Don’t care what that man do good or bad, some ridicule him, even as far as the man vacationing with his family. Antiguians full of rubbish and nonsense. Foreigners my blk @$$
The Syrians need to comply youre not above the law. Y’all come to Antigua and think you can do as you please, selling inferior products like refurbished phones and Tvs for more than the price of a new one, buying certain cars cheap, cleaning up and polish then sell for almost double the price… and pay their staff the bare minimum while trying to have sex with them.

Part of the problem that we face is the politicization of everything. It hinders the country’s performance and frustrates meaningful economic development and progress. We often witness how agencies and departments are hamstring in carrying out their legitimate functions because those affected usually run to their Minister who intervenes on their behalf. Even the police sometimes complain of political interference in the carrying out of their lawful duty. If we are to see meaning change in St. John’s and bring about some order and sanity to the city, we have to avoid the politics at all costs. If people do not obey the law and follow instructions, let the chips fall where they may.
The entire government and civil servant has to tip toe around Caucasians and seek validation, haven’t you been to business place waiting and see how whitey is picked out of the crowd by our black officials and treated with smiles and pleasantries while the momentarily give you the cut eye and tell you to just wait until your turn. I happens at all government offices.
