Jim Hodgekinson, a UK native who had lived in Antigua and Barbuda since 2007, has died amid claims of being abandoned at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center. Reports suggest he spent over a week at the hospital, sleeping on chairs outside the emergency room due to alleged problematic behavior. Hodgekinson was described as a loner and a heavy marijuana user.

  1. That’s sad that there was no framework in place to deal with a situation like that and that a person died under those circumstances. This should probably be investigated a bit more. Why did he die? Was he eating, drinking during the week? Did he pass away from a particular ailment? Was he just out of control of himself for the whole week?

  2. Shocking to learn via media.
Jim. A Gentleman, a kind soul, lost in a harsh world. The son of a high ranking UK policeman with a high ranking police women sister. He saved many persons in his life including mine and my son. A high functioning intellect with autistic traits, he rejected ‘the system’ but would help anyone he could and defend with his life. His heart was huge, his thought process often at odds with man’s individualistic condition. And so by paradox he became a loner. Unfortunately psychosis was inherent and worsened by the self medication of smoking. Many would have saved him if due diligence was given and the family notified. I have not seen him for years but he was obviously both physically and mentally unwell. We must reflect on how any person, any human being, can be left to die in such circumstances. Jim gave more than most. A staunch defender of the underdog, proud and principled to a fault, the last to ask for help, he did not deserve this demise.

    A great and unnecessary loss.

  3. ABANDONED…? …MOST UNFORTUNATE: …BETTER OFF DEAD

    A most saddening news story.

    One may say: ‘…Most Unfortunate.’

It appears more of ‘…DESTITUTION’ and ‘…MALNUTRITION,’ than of ‘…ABANDONMENT’ of ‘…BABIES.’

    PLIGHT AND MISERIES

Given his ‘…PLIGHT and MISERIES,’ well, a man/woman, so positioned, he/she is ‘…BETTER OFF DEAD.’

    QUESTION:

    ISN’T THAT SO?’

AND WHY SCREW-UP YOUR DARN FACE?’

  4. Did Gulliver make any attempts to get in touch with his high-ranking family in Britain, since he seems to have intimate knowledge of this hobo? Will he now take responsibility for his highly esteemed (to him) friend and not leave it to taxpayers to provide special services for this hobo who reportedly abused drugs, refused to conform to societal norms, who might have had untreated mental health issues and who at the end of his miserable life allegedly urinated on patients and verbally abused hospital staff. This “gentleman” according to Gulliver, this “kind soul lost in a harsh world” has now passed to a hopefully less harsh world which does not from what I have read, discriminate based on race, nationality, class or gender. By the way, was he even a legal resident of the State having lived here since 2007? We spend so much time rounding up and deporting “illegal” Caribbean residents many of whom work legitimately and pay taxes here. So that while we foolishly raise rancour about his demise during his last week on earth, may I suggest a comprehensive investigation into the last seventeen (17) years of this highly visible visitor turned vagrant so that we do not beat up ourselves unnecessarily over this inevitable outcome.

  5. Faithful National again trying to be a useless politician, the guy is like anyone else, how many Antiguan people are in the nasty hospital that no family members want to claim? It’s the same issue and the only issue is antiguans don’t care about anything however when it’s a news report everyone wants to act like they know everything and give a stupid opinion to sound like they give a crap like FAITHFUL NATIONAL # 1 BAFOON. always does. If your so interested in this case then do everything you said in your comment and help your nation solve this atrocious injustice so it doesn’t happen again to another person if you care so much or shut your mouth and deal with the fact that antigua has no capacity to provide any kind of healthcare. You go to that hospital and you’re going to die in the lobby. Taxpayers are getting ripped off of you look at it and not just through the hospital.

  6. Yes Faithful National . I tracked last night to find signal and call the British high Commissioner in UK. They should track and ship him. Unfortunately this happens to our Antihuan natives all the time. Many are unclaimed. When one of our vagrants in Barbuda went missing for two days the whole community began looking. We found him. Antigua needs more love. Just be nice. Stop the venom. Human is human. One love.

  7. Thank you Gulliver, I do hope they bring him home that’s if his family come forward. Jim was a friend of ours back here in the UK.
So sad, but sadly people with mental health issues just don’t get the care and attention they need even here in the UK.
    Rest up now Jim x
